As others have said, the easiest way to reduce salt is to prepare most of your meals (making freezer meals are great for convenience too!), and then be aware of what you buy in the grocery stores (processed meats are often the worst offenders!) and what you eat at restaurants and elsewhere - even when they sound 'healthy'. Blackened fish and soups are almost always loaded with excessive salt so I avoid them everywhere.

I have also noticed that buying prepared 'organic' foods often come with far less sodium, so if you want the convenience of packaged foods it can be a good compromise. Plus you won't lose any of the flavors. I am not really into the whole 'organic' movement, but when you read the labels you will convert on many items.

Point in case: One teaspoon of each

Trader Joe's cocktail sauce = 10mg sodium (and tastes great!)
Heinz cocktail sauce = 148mg sodium

That is nearly 15 times more salt!! And I swear you can't taste the difference. Heinz also adds triple the amount of sugar then Trader Joe's brand. Maybe to off-set the overwhelming taste of salt?

I actually realized this lately too, in my own diet. As much as 5,000mg of sodium, I have had!
    :s

I'm Vegan and was eating soup & marinara sauce with my penne the other day. Recently I realized how much sodium the Marinara Sauce I have been getting, has in it! It's by "Organics" I believe and has like 560mg per serving, which is half a cup. I'm Vegan and I eat a ton of penne, 1/2lb per sitting at least. So I now plan on finding a different Marinara Sauce, or even make my own sauce to eliminate the unnecessary Sodium (salt).

Im definitely gonna avoid those cans of soup, beans, and processed foods more often. Or even limiting them to 1x a day.
Today I have only had around 1700mg of sodium.
Just watch out for it, as too much of it can also cause bloating and weight gain. Although you should also make sure you get ENOUGH of sodium, especially if you sweat a lot.
