Is there something out there that will monitor my heart rate and give me a calorie count for a day? I almost bought a fitbit today but I was not sure if that is what I really want. I swim, cycle, use the elliptical and am looking at starting to lift weights. I don't work out everyday, but I want a more accurate picture of my energy output.

I was going to say Fitbit Charge HR, but you can't use it for swimming.

Heart rate monitors are meant for steady state cardio, not all day movement/tracking. They're just not accurate if you try to use them in that way. There used to be a product called Body Bugg, but I don't know if its still around. It gave an all day estimate but I don't know the science behind how it determined calories burned.

Different tools are more appropriate for different types of exercise, and indeed different styles of training within that.

Fr swimming and cycling some measure of distance is reasonably reliable. Actually for cycling a power meter might be best, but they're horribly expensive. For an elliptihell an HRM might be appropriate if you opt for steady state. It's a lot less accurate if you're interval training, low intensity or high intensity intervals.

There is no consistently reliable way to measure calories expended in resistance training.
