Can I possibly reset my metabolism after over a year of screwing it up? (Make that years.) I've been on again off again with South BEach for a year now. Losing several pounds, gaining several pounds. Despite the advice from all of you here, I believed that low carb was the only way I could lose weight. And now, here I am, a year later, only about 10 pounds lighter and discouraged. So, can i break this cycle? Can i eat what MFP recommends and finally lose the weight? I hope so.

I've done most of those same fad events (Scarsdale, Atkins, etc.) but since I've taken the time to pay attention to what I'm doing by using this site to document my activities -- and being VERY honest about it all -- I've managed to drop 42 lbs and still managing to maintain my incentive to continue.

I think you can do it too if you have the patience and are willing to accept that you didn't put the weight on overnight so it won't come off overnight in some miraculous way.

    Good Luck.

Being very very honest is a big part. Even if I go over in my calories I make sure I log them. The only one I would be deceiving is myself. I know I have a long way to go. But I can wait.

    Yes! I think so!

After years of reading and research, the two main things that boost metabolism are eating and exercise - so do both frequently everyday and you'll speed it up! (think back to the early 90's... Oprah's trainer Bob Greene spoke about this - saying that she'd screwed up hers, so she had to eat 5 small meals a day, workout for an hour in the morning, and evening, and get other little bursts of exercise throughout the day).

    Good luck to us all!

Thanks for the advice and encouragement everyone! Exercise may be part of the problem. I typically only get in 3 x/ week (sometimes 2 and rarely 4). With 3 little ones and a part time job, it gets tricky. I really can't foresee going any more than 3 or 4 times/week in this season of my life. Is that ok?

Sounds like a great effort to me!

You might like to join our Crunch Challenge! You basically do 100+ crunches, 40+ lunges, and 20+ push ups each day (or whatever number works for you). I have two little ones, so I fit them in all throughout the day (I'm no so good at the push ups, but I really get an energy jolt from the lunges and crunches!).
