Antidepressants can decrease metabolism slightly and increase appetite drastically. Combine that with the depression they are treating which generally decreases desire for activity and may induce one to eat for comfort, and you have the perfect weight gain formula. You need to confront these issues head on, Eat less and move more. To help control your hunger-experiment with macro-nutrients, usually increase of protein and lower carbs, while keeping total calories in at a deficit. Experiment with meal timing and increase fiber to help you feel fuller longer. Exercise will help control your depression and increases the amount you can eat and still lose weight. I find walking to really help elevate my mood.

I wasn't depressed, but I was bulimic and after I stopped, I gained weight back very fast. I got very discouraged and that led to 100 pound weight gain along with a "mild depression" (per my college psychologist). So, I started eating clean, being nice to myself, and exercising. If I didn't exercise, I felt bad and sluggish and was in a pissy mood. My best advice is to be kind to yourself and understanding of the fact you're not going to be perfect. Be consistent with your exercise. Switch it up so you don't get bored and quit. Be creative with your healthy recipes (Pinterest is AMAZING!). Also, gradually increase the intensity of your workouts to avoid hitting a plateau. And most importantly, do what works for you. You know what you can and can't handle and you're better able to read your body than most others. Good luck!

I've been on Anti Depressants for around 8 years - I did gain weight but I can't 100% say that it was because of my medication or because I was eating too much. I'd say a bit of both. I've since lost around 34 lbs, so know that your medication certainly won't stop you from reaching your goals. I totally agree with everything DaniWilford said above - and importantly of all, believe in yourself. You can do this

I am on 2 anti-depression medicines for clinical depression: Wellbutin and cyprelex. I gained weight after being put on them, but, since I had basically stopped eating, this was due to eating again. I was eating a lot of carbs and sugars as a way of self-medicating myself with a sugar high. It took around 2 years to stabilize myself. In May, I seriously started my weight loss journey. I started working out more, which raised my beta endorphins naturally. I now go to hot yoga, and am doing a 30 classes in 30 days challenge. My mood has been really, really good since starting this.

It is possible to lose weight while on anti-depressants. You set a reasonable weekly weight loss goal, weight and record everything you eat or drink, have a daily calorie deposit and exercise. It may be a little harder for you, as the medicine is affecting your weight loss journey, but you can do it.

I do have depression but I don't take meds since it's just minor. I found that if I do 1 hour of walking, take zumba dancing class in the morning or yoga, it helps a lot. Otherwise I have problems of doing anything... all I want to do is stay in bed and on internet all the time.
