Beginner's Workouts?

It's been years since I've been in a gym and am joining on this weekend. I was just wondering if anyone has any starting tips for an all over workout. I don't get winded easily but I don't want to overdo it and get discouraged. Thanks so much in advance!

I am trying to find beginners workouts that I like as well. Look on you tube. There are some free workouts on there with good instructors, Leslie Sansone, Jessica Smith, Billy Blanks, Denise Austin, Jillian Michaels, Kathy Smith, and more. There is a cool program called Heavyweight Yoga that is really good even though the dvd's are a little more pricey. Also, a series called Shapelygirl is pretty good. It is frustrating not being able to do exactly the workouts you would like. I Used to love step aerobics and The Firm workout videos but they are a bit too tough for me at this point. There are some cool programs from Beachbody as well from beginner to advance. Slim in 6 is a good one and P90 but I am not huge fan of the guy who leads the workouts. Also check out your library. That is a great way to try workouts and kind of figure out where you are in your fitness journey and find good instructors. Collagevideo.com and fitnessvideo.com (?) are pretty good sites to try to find out about different workouts.

I was just thinking, there are always old fashioned workouts like hiking, running, lifting weights, swimming, and biking.

I agree with YouTube. There are many great free routines available.
I personally like Fitness Blender on YouTube. Many videos, some very basic, others target specific areas, etc. Check it out!!

Some gyms have a "circuit" area, where there's 4-5 machines set up specifically to do a circuit train-- you can do as many reps or circuits as you'd like.

Most gyms may offer a 1:1 session when you sign up. Did yours? If yes, ask your trainer!! If not, ask if there's someone available to help you!

Perhaps start easy, with cardio machines you're familiar with, the elliptical or stairs or bicycling. Watch other people use the weights, see what they're doing.
You can find a quieter floor space area & do simple resistance training with lighter weights, like bicep curls, etc.

Good luck!! I'd just research & read online. There's a lot of good info available. Getting to the gym is a big step, just start feeling comfortable going and being there and start slow.

*this one is purely informational, but still a good quick read. Good tips to get started & switch up workouts

The gist: transition to weights & strength training early on. Mix it up on different days. Again, have fun & good luck!!

Walking is a great activity at almost all fitness levels provided you don't have an orthopedic reason to avoid... If you are clear for general fitness activities consider making walking part of the mix!
