I just bought a small bag of pre-cooked chicken drumettes. The label says the calorie count is 196 calories for 100 grams. Is that just the edible portion only, or the entire drumette? Should I weight the bones, then subtract that from the 100 grams?

I would take it that its just the meat and not the bones

It should be only the parts you eat.

indeed it is....but you dont eat the bone so you subtract what you dont eat.

My dietitian told me that with stuff like that, I should weigh it as is, with bones, pits, etc. - that the weight counted everything, but the calories were for the edible portion only.

Several posters here have said they've heard differently and that you should back out the weight of the pits, bones, etc.

I'm going to double-check next time I'm in, but I'm sticking with the dietitian for now. Weighing with the extras is easier, anyway. :)

Yes that is what you do...weigh it raw and prepare it...what is left over you subtract. You didn't eat it! So why count what you didn't eat.

compare the package label to the usda database entry. If the calories on the package label for 100 g are substantially less than the usda entry (which is for edible portion only), then it means the package details assume you weigh the entire product (including bones) to determine a serving size. If the package label pretty much matches the USDA entry, it means it's assuming you're only weighing the edible portion to determine serving size.
