Yoga?

I've only done walking in my exercise regimen, slowly increasing speed and distance. Now I am starting a basic (balance) yoga video for 30 min twice a week. What benefits can I expect?

Body feeling generally better, more relaxed, better sleep, more focus when making food choices and body working better on the walks. Also more laughing!

I find yoga to be a fantastic complement to strength training. I work on flexibility (range of motion), bodyweight strength & improved balance. I have increased my knowledge of where my muscles tend to be tighter & have better overall body awareness of weaknesses & strengths.

In addition to all states above, there is more! Less stress. Helps with decreasing injuries from not stretching. Being active instead of just sitting on the couch...

You should gain some strength along with better balance if you are doing the kind of balance poses I'm thinking of. But 30 minutes (and only 2x a week) is pretty short, so that depends on how many poses are done, what they hit, and how long they are held.

It should improve your flexibility, too, so those poses are often double-duty that way :)

And increased strength, balance flexibility and mental calmness. :)

Yoga can be extremely challenging if you increase the level of the poses and length of the yoga class over time.

Don't have expectations and just enjoy it. You'll notice what is happening to you as you progress x

At the very least a good stretch. If you're able to tap into the spiritual aspects of it the benefits are much more than physical. Not everyone is interested in that, though.

Personally I've found yoga helps my weight loss not because it's a hearty workout but because it clears my mind and helps me navigate good choices for me. That's a bit of an oversimplification but there you go.

it should help you become more aware of your body. You will start thinking about tiny muscles you didn't know you had, and get a better idea of what you are capable of. I think yoga is awesome for anyone with exercise fear; those of us who are afraid to push ourselves too far. It may also help your posture, which will help with running and lifting over time.
