Where to start?

I have lost about 2 stone down to eating a better diet. I've been maintaining for a while now so not tracking much. I don't really want to lose a lot more weight but have recognised a need to improve my fitness now that my dietary improvements are sticking.
I am 38, have a sedentary job and aside from walking / swimming with the kid (hardly heavy duty exercise) I don't move much.

I used to do a lot of step aerobics and horse riding (20 yrs ago). Since then I've swum (rather cold and wet), danced / yogad (can't commit to go the same evening every week), walked and cycled for fitness. However due to work / parenting commitments and down right laziness I've not done much at all over the last 5 years.

I have joined a local gym (I think the gym will avoid my dislike of cold and wet weather and as it is 24/7 will allow me to flex around my other commitments.), have a pair of all round trainers, no medical conditions and am determined to do "something" 3 or 4 times per week. Trouble is I don't really know where to start. In 3 x 1 hr sessions per week what is best to increase my overall fitness and maybe tone a little? There are classes I could do, equipment I could use, weights I could lift but I just don't really know what to do.

I went the day I joined and did 30 minutes on the treadmill (walk 5min, jog 5min alternating), 10 minutes on the stepping machine and 15 minutes with some stretches, sit-ups and generally feeling a bit unfocussed. I am going again tonight but no further forward on the subject of what to do when I get there.

Help!

Does the gym you joined have a trainer? Ask that person for an evaluatiion and a program. Most gyms provide that service, at least first timers.
