As we know the holidays are approaching us! How do you guys maintain your eating habits during the holdodays when family members make all the delicious foods....?
Can I eat foods that are cooked for the holidays, do I just watch my portions and just eat a little bit?! What do you do?
Help!

This will be my second holiday season since gaining weight. I plan to do the same things that I did last year. I do not expect to lose any weight from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. If I do, great. If not, great. I'll be eating at maintenance during that time period with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Days, when I won't log at all and will eat whatever I want. During that time period I'll likely have a few holiday parties and I'll just eat within reason at them. Most of the parties have foods that I can get anytime, which makes portion control very easy.0 -
My plan is to eat smaller portions and don't go back for seconds. I will also plan a long jog on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day (weather permitting). I don't plan to log food, just eat less than I'd really like and move more.0

I handle each event in different ways. Sometimes I eat before going and limit myself to one drink/snack while I am there. Sometimes I eat lightly the rest of the day and just enjoy the food. I usually skip things I can eat year round and focus on the special foods that are usually made one time during the year. If it's a meal I fill most of the plate with lean meat and vegetables, but make sure to have something yummy too.0

I'm not touching anything outside my calorie limit except on DAY OF Christmas and Thanksgiving, where I intend to not even log on here. However, if there's something I just must have, I'll go for a jog and burn-it-to-earn-it:)0

what I plan to do is enjoy whatever i want on thanksgiving and christmas eve. i may log what i eat or i may not.
my hubby pointed out to me that i probably will end up not being able to indulge myself on those days like i think since i am use to eating in smaller amounts now..we will see!0 -
I take some time off around the holidays and I try to use at least some of this time for myself....exercising and prepping meals. I will try to get my family out for long walks, maybe even bike rides if the weather is good. I try to remember that parties are about seeing friends and family, not just eating. I love the candles and music so there is much to love besides just FOOD
I do indulge but I'm picky. I try to indulge on things that I can only get at the holidays. And, I try not to let the holidays go on from mid November thru January. That is almost 50 days and too much. I like to say that we have a lot of Christmas, in a short period of time. My girls and I will bake cookies, on Christmas eve day. One or two kinds of cookies, not the 20 that we did when I was growing up. A plate of cookies will be dessert for Christmas eve. Yes, we always make dad's favorite kind and he's been dead for 15 years but I enjoy the cookie and remember and talk about him.
I love my stuffing on thanksgiving, but I don't eat it continuously for the next week, its more of a yearly indulgence. Other things like turkey, I will plan to have tons of leftovers. And, I do love veggies so thanksgiving dinner has a lot of green for us. As for pie, I don't love pumpkin and can pass on it. I do like pecan but a smaller piece satisfies me. And, we do go for long walks that morning.0 -
I didn't gain any weight during the holidays last year (it was the rest of the year that was a challenge ) Anyway... Same plan. Enjoy DAY OF Thanksgiving and DAY OF Christmas. I probably wont log those days but I log the other days. I have a goal mid December to hit so I will likely be on point this month over the holidays.
Oh yes, and I'm still hitting the gym around the holidays. No question. On the day of, I will probably just walk or get some outside exercise with my little one0 -
I have been thinking about this a lot. The main challenge for me will be the desserts. I was talking about this last night with friend. I think some of the food may be too rice and i will not be able to eat much anyway. I am going to keep up my exercise and eat, but not lose my mind. That will only be for the holidays. So if I gain anything at Thanksgiving, by Christmas I will have lost that and some. New Years I will come out fighting again...lol0

We've had a lot of celebrations even leading up to the holidays (Grandmother's 82nd this past week). I log, but I'm not obsessive about it. Dieting through holidays in the past, I pretty much just ate whatever. A couple of days of indulgence aren't going to wreck your entite diet for the rest of the year.
I wouldn't recommend ALL the cookies and pies, but some of them won't hurt (and are a well deserved celebration with loved ones). Or, if you are like me, eating a bunch of ham, rolls, stuffing, macaroni, and mashed potatoes (a few days of the year) won't hurt!0 -
I prelog, just like any other day. Sometimes adjustments are needed0

I will attempt to do more cardio between now and Christmas, while still eating at a deficit. By the 19th of December when I plan to start taking out the sweets and treats I'll continue with the cardio but will permit myself to eat at maintenance.
Then on the actual days of celebration like Christmas Eve, Day, New Year's Eve, Day I will actually just eat without worrying if I go over my calories for the day but I'll still probably keep doing my cardio sessions. I'll probably stay at maintenance until the first or second week of January is done and then return to a calorie deficit in hopes of losing any weight I may have put on and ultimately reaching my goal weight if all that extra cardio doesn't help me reach it first.
As long as I don't put on more weight than I did last year during the holidays, I will be happy.0
