Need more iron

So I've noticed that I'm not getting enough iron each day, I don't really like red meat and even when I ate a lot of spring greens yesterday it didn't go up much, I hate spinach. What else can I boost my iron intake with?

Pork loins/chops have a lot of iron.

Canned clams are great for iron, if you like them. Liver, pinto beans, canned clams, tortilla flour, fortified breakfast cereals...every little bit helps. Multivitamins have iron in them.

Cooking in cast iron is helpful. You cannot log it and there isn't much, but it helps.

Try to work some Vitamin C into the meal with the iron so it will help you absorb it.

Don't worry too much. Unless your levels come back low at your yearly physical, you may be doing fine. :)

What made you notice that you're lacking iron? Unless your doctor told you to increase your iron intake, I wouldn't worry about it. Not all of the MFP database entries include the full nutritional information; lots of people enter the calories and basic macro information (protein/fat/carbs) but don't enter the rest of the nutritional information, including iron.

Oh OK I didn't know that. I worry about my iron particularly as I spent a year being treated for aneamia and just got good iron count in may this year so I don't want it to drop again.

Nothing like taking iron supplements to make you not want to take iron supplements! Been there, done that!

If you buy bread at the store, look for enriched breads. Every little bit helps!! You might want to consult a dietitian. You'll get better advice that is tailored to your preferences.

I added breakfast cereal just to increase my iron. I eat very little red meat and don't like meat in general, but choke some down for the iron. Eating a mostly plant-based diet can make getting enough iron tough, especially if you're prone to anemia.

Because of constipation? I've heard of this but never experienced it myself. I haven't had an issue with constipation since I started taking Vitamin C to bowel tolerance.

You can't trust the MFP micronutrients most foods are incomplete

You need to judge by blood tests

Yes, the constipation. I have a hell of a time when I have to take iron. Without the iron, my Synthroid and fiber are enough to keep me regular. With the iron, it becomes very challenging. And it bites.
