While this news report, like so many newspaper stories, doesn't quite present the science accurately, this is an interesting story... Never really occurred to me that exhaled carbon could add up.

----
Every time you exhale, you lose weight.

That simple scientific calculation comes from physics teacher and obsessive scientific truth seeker Derek Muller , the energy and mass behind the Veritasium YouTube channel.

Muller started pondering the mystery of why people wake up weighing less than they did when they went to sleep, by about 250 grams.

Only about 150 grams of that is water loss as sweat. At 16 breaths a minute over eight hours, though, people also exhale a lot of air, including carbon dioxide.

Very interesting. I actually sleep in later on Saturdays because the scale is always less then earlier in the morning :) Now it makes sense.

    Ha ha!

I do lose weight when I sleep more, for two obvious reasons.

    1. Less time to eat. Normally I eat 2 meals before noon, so if I sleep in, I'm way ahead of the game.
    2. I have food cravings when I'm tired. The only time I care about sweets is when i don't get enough sleep.
