What machine or workout burns the most calories.

    It really depends on whose doing it and how much they exert themselves. You can't guarantee a burn for a specific exercise.

    For example, today I did an intense Les Mills combat (it was awesome!) but even though I pushed myself, I can't do a lot of jumping and that of course, effects my calorie burn.

    any intense cardio like running, swimming, cycling. it depends how long you can sustain it. for example if you burn 600 calories per hour running and 500 calories per hour cycling, but you can cycle for 1 hour at that rate but only run for 30 minutes, then you'll only burn 300 calories running while you burn 500 cycling.

    the highest rate I've seen is cranking the treadmill to 15 mph, burns like 1800 calories per hour, but I can only run 30 seconds at that pace.

    High intensity or crossfit type workouts cause your body to keep burning calories even after you stop the workout. However if you push yourself hard enough then almost any machine will get you a good burn. You want to stay in your target heart rate for at least 30 minutes for max burn.

    Looking for the most calorie burn can sometimes be the wrong approach. Sprints are great but if you can't do them, then it's a worthless exercise for you to do.
    Find something you can do CONSISTENTLY. That will burn the most calories.

    On the elliptical, I set resistance to high, 13-15 (if max is 20) and ramp low. On the spin bike, I increase the resistance and do a standing climb and I stay standing for most of the hour. Outdoors, I like to simply run up and down a hill. Cycling is also good especially if you have hills to climb.

    No to mention that when it comes to very intense exercise, perception does not always match reality regarding calories burned. I have seen so many times (and been tempted to do it myself) people call their slow run a sprint, based on how hard they felt it was, while actual speed had nothing to do with a sprint, or people call HIIT interval training that really had nothing to do with HIIT.

    The one you can do for the longest duration with a reasonably high but sustainable intensity level.
    Remember it's you not the machine that burns calories, you are the limiting factor and not the machine.

    If I only had 8 minutes then 2000m on the rowing machine flat out would probably be my highest possible burn.
    If I have anything from 30mins to several hours then it would be cycling - because I'm a cyclist and not because the cycle burns more than an elliptical for example.

    HIIT isn't a big calorie burner - it's very short duration and a proportion of the short duration is low intensity recovery time.
    Ditto for sprints - very, very short duration.
    The after burn of using calories after workout has finished (EPOC) is often exaggerated and generally pretty insignificant.

    But please don't exercise just for calorie burns!
    Think of your health and fitness goals. Plus enjoyment and fit with your lifestyle - that ultimately makes it sustainable.

    I agree with everyone. I think sometimes doing a gym session of a bit of everything is a good burner as different body parts, like today I did cross trainer, rower, stepper weights then tredmill.

    Do you need to use machines? Swimming is one of the best calorie burning exercises, not to mention working pretty much all of the major muscle groups.

    For me, I found a local, "boot camp," that makes me burn the most. I've been going for almost 2 years so it's constant. I've made a lot friends there so that pushes me harder every time I go.
