The accusatory tone of so many of the responses is intriguing.

Since you are training for a very specific body type for modeling it might make sense to make the professional investment to get a trainer who can tone you up the way you want. I think you are at a point where amateurs on a website can't help.

    Anyone have any experience?

I'm pretty thin but I need to get my hips around 36 inches at MOST, which is hard since I have really wide hipbones. I also need to get my bodyfat% down (it's pretty high since I have a tendency to lose muscle over fat)
From my own experience, i hope you are not doing runway.

Also, do strength training. And even though I was below those numbers... You really don't have to have a specific hip line if you have a look someone wants, you well get a job.

I started lifting heavy last semester, but I had to stop because my thighs got really big.

I eat a lot and don't do much cardio. I focus on strength mainly.

Then eat less. You aren't going to get anything smaller (body fat, measurements, weight, etc) if you are eating too much.

And if you are focused on strength, you aren't losing muscle. If you are, you're doing something seriously wrong.

I lost weight even though, I lost 5 pounds but my butt/thighs got bigger??? I don't know why...
As soon as the semester ended and I stopped going to the gym I lost an inch off my upper thigh and more off of my mid-thigh.

And yes, women's bodies do work like that, it's very easy so build thigh muscle. My friend's a swimmer and even though we're the same height and size her thighs are three times mine because of her training, which doesn't even involve any heavy lifting >.>

I am sorry, but no. Not without eating at a surplus. I work very hard to KEEP the muscle in my thighs/butt while eating less. Your friend eats to fuel her swimming, if she starts eating less, her thighs will slim down. Genetics play a big role too.

I agree with Kristin and Elle, your best bet is to head to a professional for nutrition and fitness training to reach your goals. If this really is your career, then its a worthwhile investment.

I know modeling is a rough business...I wasnt even runway or catalog or anything glamourous, I modeled for a clothing designer who was putting together his portfolio. Im 5'10", at that time was about 140lbs, very muscular though as I was jsut out the army and had pretty much no fat on me, and a size 4, and considered a plus sized model. Aye!! I am a pear shape, and even at my very very smallest my hips were at 36". I can lose weight, but I will never be able to adjust the size of my hip bones...

But okay here I have a friend who is a catalogue and print ad model, she is only a sliver shorter than me, 5'9" minimum, and she is a ballet dancer. So her body is incredibly lean, but also very muscular. When shes not practicing for the theatre, shes training, and her body is *smallll*! but she looks healthy and amazing. She has a ruler shape (is that what its called?) so because of that, she just naturally has an overall slimmer frame.

I didnt see anyone ask or mention your body shape, but if you are pear or hourglass, you will have a harder time with attaining that straight model body shape, because well, your bones just arent going to shrink down to offer you that. and from what Im reading, it seems that may be part of the thing here.

But anyway, most of the models I know are also dancers, with very lean and muscular bodies.. Oh, and on being muscular, I really get blah when people say womens bodies arent built to be muscular. I have a naturally muscular body...I dont work out at all and people all the time think I live in the gym cause of my arms. When I actually do hit the gym, my arms and legs look insane. So I personally can feel where someone is coming from when they say they get bigger. All I have to do is look at a weight machine and my biceps start getting all amped up LoL

Anyway....invest in your career and get a pro to help you out.

^This. There have been a ton of "I'm getting "bulky" from muscle gains from lifting (and even cardio)"...but very few pictures of the supposed bulkiness.

And the very few that did get posted ended up being not bulky. It was all in the person's head.

Over what period of time was this? How much bigger did they get?

Already said a good inch on my upper thigh but more mid-thigh, over the course of 5 months approximately, I hadn't done heavy weights before, only 5 lbs dumbbells and bodyweight exercises.
What is your thigh measurements - how much do you weigh and how tall are you? Without that info nobody can help you.....

Now my thigh is 19 inches. I'm 5'9.5 and 110.5 lbs at the moment because I'm sick. Before I got sick I was 114lbs and at the same measurements.

and you consider that to be a big thigh measurement for someone as tall as you?

btw, you are also rather underweight.

you clearly have lost some perspective and there is no way on this earth that any part of your body is muscular.

I'd stake my life on it.

Honestly, at your weight now and wanting to lose more only verifies to me that modeling is probably one of the most unhealthy jobs one could take on. Not a personal attack against you, but on the pressure that the modeling world puts on young females to try to achieve a look that obviously isn't arrived at in a healthy sensible manner.
    I have no advice. Sorry.

I'm 5'8 , when I was 120 my hips were 36", and I have the opposite of muscle, my bf% is super high. Definitely try working on some lifting and strength training, and also amazing for that is yoga. I have had large muscles once (long ago sadly haha) because of sports, but at times where I didn't eat an excess of calories, toned muscles made my measurements smaller. I have a teeny tiny frame as well, I look average at 120, as told by my parents, doctor, and friends.
As a note, don't hurt your body for modeling. It's not worth it. I was offered jobs when I was a minor but my parents turned them down because that job can sometimes break a girl. It's bad for your mental health.

Never said I was bulky. Anyway havent done strength training in almost 2 years so Im not even big. Just said that I naturally have a muscular build and it doesnt take much for my body to respond. Not sure why the negativity that its hard to believe or would make someone sick. All I did was share my experience to say I understand where the OP is coming from. Jeez the negativity.

Cant help you with measurement changes...can only say that at the moment, arm in photo is 13" Just took a couple photos, one at rest, a bit soft...one a pathetic attempt at a flex, but my bicep and under my arm (tricep?) are solid when I do. At least now you cant complain no one has ever posted a photo to prove themselves to you since you dont believe bodies can be different...get the feeling the real intent is just pics to be critical of rather than genuine interest. Ah well, Ive met other ladies like me, and maybe those in teh same boat can accept their bodies without people trying to make them feel like freaks for not being typical, and hopefully </ thread jack > while we're at it.

My original advice to the OP stands, most models I know are fit, work out and look healthy. And i do think that considering this is part of a career goal, consulting with a professional is the way to go.

i LOVE that my arms are bulky (for a woman and in proportion to the rest of my body.) from lifting. yes, i know it doesn't show in my av. i'm not taking a pic just for this thread. the only downside is finding tops that will fit my arms now without being too big everywhere else. and, yeah, people do comment. but i think it's cool. the kids wind my ex up about me having bigger guns. weirdly, my legs never seem to get any bigger.

maybe it's genetic. my father is much the same way.

Are you trying to go into fashion modeling? Most female (and plenty of the males) fashion models keep their weight down by severely under eating and working out. When you're in the industry and aren't naturally very thin, you have to work hard at it for the entire time you're there. Even more shapely models, like Tyra Banks, have to put in a lot of work to stay as small as possible while working.

You're just not going to get the kind of advice for fashion modeling that you want here. Nobody is going to tell you the trade secrets, which can be very unhealthy, but are standard for that business. You're not going to be told to just "suck it up, take those calories super low, and try to stay alive".

Looks like you have regular thin lady arms to me. (and that is a compliment) Definitely not overly muscular or bulky.

edit: you have basically the same measurements as me and I'm trying to increase size. I think I do need your secret.

A woman will not gain bulky muscles without drugs.

You probably lost an inch because of water weight loss. When you work your muscles by lifting, your muscle retain water which can make them temporarily bigger.

Track your calories, lift heavy and eat at a small deficit to lose body fat.

I'm 5'11" and also have a small frame. As a teenager, I was approached for modeling though I declined. When I was 19, I weighed 125 pounds naturally. I ate like a horse, barely exercised, and my measurements were 36-26-35 and my thighs were 19 inches. However, I was a little squishy, despite being a loose size 5.

In my early 20s, I started adding bodyweight exercises and light resistance to my cardio. I went up to 145 pounds over the course of two years, but my measurements did not change. I realize that some of that was due to my body maturing as well. In any case, I was 20 pounds heavier, still the same size, and a lot firmer. It's not really what you weigh, but how it's composed. Tyra Banks was in the 140 range when she was a VS model.

As for thigh size, I'm currently in the 180s trying to get down to 150, and my thighs measure 20 inches around. My legs just don't hold onto weight and they will probably "land" at 19 inches and stay there long before I reach my goal. I like my legs, but I jokingly call them "chicken legs" sometimes. 20 inch thighs are not big on a tall woman.

Though I fully understand the business side of things. Depending on what you're trying to sell, a different look, a different body is very "appropriate". So strong and fit isn't the best for every model.

My advice to you is, find a modelling career that doesn't involve you making yourself ill. Don't fall into what a modelling agent tells you is attractive.

There is no way at nearly 5"10 your BMI or measurements are too much. I am 5"10 also, and my goal weight is 180lb. At nearly 70lb less than that, I just can't imagine you would look healthy. Sorry.

That's a very good idea. If you want to model, great... but perhaps you can find a branch of modeling that doesn't require such unhealthy practices?

Awe!!! I will definitely take that as a compliment!! Thank you :) LoL Most people say I look "healthy and strong", rarely anything to make me feel like a lady, so you really did just make my day =D

Hate to say it, but the secret is genes. My daughter has my same build. I think I got it from my dad, because from all the photos of him, he looked really fit and muscular, but he never worked out.

With this whole thing on thigh size and weight etc, I really hesitate to compare my body to anyone elses and tell them what theyd look bad at some certain weight because of what my body looks like or what my goals are.

I am 5'10, 190lbs and have 27" thighs, WAY bigger than I read of ladies on here. Even back when I used to be 140-145 my thighs were about 25" (but solid at least), and Im still really curvy, but have seen stats and success pics of ladies here who are my height and at 140-150 look really thin.

My goal isnt to be skinny, Id just like to even things out so that it doesnt look *so* huge compared to my upper body, but I like having curves and substance (lol) For me thats around 145-150. If my goal was to be slender, I would have to, and could go as low as 130 and still not look sickly.

So yeah, no way I could tell someone, youd look horrible at this weight or that weight. Numbers are cool to work with at the beginning of a weight loss / fitness journey, but as one gets closer to goal, its more about measurements and how you look and feel than what the scale says or what someone else thinks the scale should say.

Well, considering my doctor told me to lose weight at 135, I just can't Imagine someone looking healthy at 180lbs.
    Sorry.
