Hypothyroidism

Hi all,

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I was prescribed Synthroid, and told that I would probably have to take this medication for the rest of my life.

However, I am somewhat against the notion of becoming dependant on the drug for regular hormone production since I am only 18 years old and relatively healthy.

I have been researching for days about what kind of foods to eat, and have come across a lot of conflicting information.

So I was just wondering if anyone out there is experiencing -or has gone through- the problems that I am facing, and if you could tell me what foods worsened your symptoms or improved them.

Thank you in advance :)

  • I'm in the same boat but I was actually born without any function in my thyroid. You get use to taking your pill. If you miss a day, you can make it up the next with that and yesterdays pill.

There aren't many things you can't eat. If there are any restrictions, I'd say drink alot of water with your pill and you have to wait 30 minutes before eating for it fully digest. A word to the wise, don't eat anything with a lot of iron and/or calcium for about five hours because those interfere with the Synthroid.

From what I've read (my husband had blood results possibly suggesting early hypothyroidism):

    1. Drink more water
    2. Exercise more (60 minutes a day)
    3. Eat food rich in Iodine (seaweed) and Selenium (brazil nuts, garlic, onion)
    4. Avoid wheat gluten

The food suggestions were tailored to our diet.
