I have set a goal for myself to enter into my first powerlifting meet one year from now. I am new to this but I love lifting heavy weights. I'm not sure where to start or how to start. If anyone can give me advice I love it and appreciate it. And if you can give me any meets in the Ohio area.

You can start out with pretty much any 5x5 program, but I do suggest that you consider getting a coach at some point. They can help with your form to ensure you are lifting safe and effectively. I believe there are a few barbell clubs in your area.

Here's a list of meets, they'll update as more meets are scheduled: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/powerlifting-meets

Start on a 3x5 or 5x5 program. Check out powerliftingtowin for a review of most of the programs. He has his own starting program as well that seems pretty good.
Next, figure out a way to record your lifts. You'll need feedback on your form. Join a forum like ironstrong.org or bodybuilding.com and post in a thread about form.
If you have the money, you can hire a coach to do all this, but they can be expensive (200$/month).

Columbus Ohio is a huge area for fitness, especially powerlifting. Good luck to you!

I've been doing Madcow for the last 7 weeks. Trying to work my way on up the weight scale. Any other tips or advice for competing/day of/etc.?
