Flatmates wont let me get a cat? Is it me or them being unfair?

So I live in a 2 bedroom flat with two flatmates, a couple. Despite asking to change it, it is still only their names on the lease so I dont really have any rights. Its a no pet lease.
For years, I have wanted a cat. I grew up with cats and have yearned for feline company since I left my parents. Now would be a good time to get one and my parents have agreed to buy me a kitten for my birthday.
My flatmates however are refusing. I think they're being a little bit unfair. A few months ago, they got a cat. They didnt consult me or consider my opinion relevant whatsoever, they just simply mentioned it one day after it had been decided and organised to get a cat. Noone thought to ask me if I was okay with it. They knew I like cats as I'd talked about it but didn't ask if living with one now was an issue. So they got this cat. And shes a lovely cat but shes a cat so she has annoying habits. She doesnt clean herself in her litter but all over the carpet, she meows in the hallway early every morning, she has destroyed the walls clawing at them. My flatmates go abroad on holiday and again without checking its okay just assume I'll catsit. I've never raised any of these things as an issue and just put up with them, as I know they put up with annoying things of mine.
Now I would like a cat myself and did the stupid thing trying to be a reasonable flatmate of speaking to them about it first. And they have refused. They claim its because it wouldnt be fair if my new cat didnt get on with theirs. I personally think it would do their cat a lot of good to have some company to interact with. They leave it shut in one room and by itself overnight and when theyre at work so around 18-20 hours a day in one room and alone which I dont think is fair. Also, their cat is still young and theres no reason they wouldnt get along. In the event they didnt though, I would find mine a new cat free home.
I dont think though the reason is their cat. I think they think I wouldnt look after a cat properly. If theres anything Im good at though, its being devoted to a cat. They think I would let it/its litter become unclean and smelly which I wouldn't.
I think theyve been a little selfish and unfair. Am I alone in thinking that? Also, does anyone have any advice on a) letting them know I feel hard done by without rocking the boat too much as they can kick me out instantly as Im on no lease and ideally b) how to convince them to let me get a cat too?

My initial reaction is: Move out and report them to animal welfare.0

Why not give their cat the attention as if it was your own? Improve its quality of life.0

I wanted a cat too. I got one and now I don't anymore.0

Your name isn't on the lease, so if your cat destroys walls or the carpet it's not your legal responsibility. If you want a cat that bad maybe it's time to get your own place where you can legally have a pet.0

So...there is already one a*hole cat in the apartment tearing stuff up and you think adding another so you can call it your own is a good idea?0

Obviously from the depths of Hell where cats come from. Yours must be broken or something. Or quietly plotting.

Lolll. I wish my cat was chill I really do but unfortunately she's a complete *kitten* and I hate her. I feed her and treat her good but she is Hell with claws
