Goal weight achieved!

17 months ago, my doctor told me to lose some weight (to be fair, she says that every year, but she sounded more serious this time). She suggested a Fitbit, and I found MFP that way. MFP allowed me to lose weight my way, which is to say lazily: I didn't cut any foods out of my diet (though beer, red meat, and cheese consumption all went down) nor did I increase exercise, but simply counted calories. I also knew it would be pointless to lose weight if the loss wasn't sustainable, so I chose to go as gently as possible, setting my goal at 1/2 pound per week (only 250 calories/day under maintenance).
I still ate pizza, cheeseburgers, and ice cream (albeit much, much less frequently than I once did). I still enjoyed my holidays and vacations (there was some serious backsliding on a week-long trip to France). But as of this morning, I've lost the 60 pounds I set out to lose and am down to a weight I haven't seen I more than 30 years. Calorie counting works, no doubt about it. Hang in there, everyone; if I can do this, anyone can.

Nice work! 60 lbs is fabulous! Pat yourself on you (now smaller) back.
This is my kind of method. This year I lost 8 lbs, mostly in the first six months. I haven't gained any of it back. I still could stand to lose another 7-8 but decided to wait until after the holidays before ramping up the effort a bit. Like you, I'm happy with a slow loss as long as I'm not making myself crazy.0 -
Well said, if weight loss is your only goal, just stick to this budget and everything works.0

Your post is the second I've read recently where someone lost a lot of weight setting their goal to 1/2 pound a week. Not a bad strategy at all. That way you don't go crazy and binge because you've been strict for six months to a year. I find the deprivation comes to roost after many months.…and my will power blows up. This time, I'm not counting calories.. eating in moderation..exercising to my enjoyment..and losing keeping my sanity.0
