It was sardines, artichokes and mozzarella on those amazing crusts they have. All very salty and it was delicious with beer. Lotsa beer.
I want this pizza now. Right now.
That sounds beyond amazing. I just bought anchovies for a pizza I am going to be making. yum.0 -
I love sardines.
Please only buy Cornwall drift or ring net MSC sardines though. The biscay purse seine fisheries are damaging to the local ecosystem and generate significant bycatch0 -
My 13 year old son LOVES them.
He gets a can every year for Christmas in his stocking and for his birthday. Sometimes they mysteriously jump into my shopping cart. When he has his own money, he always sets a little aside for sardines.
He eats them outside, on our deck, straight out of the can.
Once, he won a contest at youth group because he was the only one who would eat them. He ate one for everyone on his team and was a hero!
@bril170lb I have to say that your Son sounds absolutely adorable and also Yay for Sardines in any form

That's funny because I love tuna but I won't even kiss my husband if he's eaten a can of sardines LOL0 -
Kipper snacks! Yummmmmm.0

Okay, so I really enjoy canned tuna, but the idea of the bones in sardines just makes me twitchy, even though I know they're soft, etc.
Anyone in the US recommend a brand to me, preferably easily found at a Kroger or Publix?0 -
Don't shop at either one, but I've bought boneless skinless Bar Harbor and King Oscar sardines. As they are doused in mayo and horseradish, I have no idea if they are good or not.0

I think the name of this thread is quite funny, and wondered what "sardine people" might look like: https://google.com/search?q=%22sardine+people%22&safe=off&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiz0tbB_Z3JAhVPTYgKHeK5AvQQ_AUIBygB&biw=1164&bih=817#imgrc=OR868q_16jpHIM%3A0

It's all we've got here unless I care to drive 30 min to the Piggy Wiggly, though I am sure Walmart carries them too, and likely the Super Target.
So you can just mash them up like canned tuna? The bones aren't obvious?0 -

Tomorrow is the day. God help me, I'm going to eat one tomorrow.

I think sardines are an acquired taste, not just the first time, but like every time. Even now, even though I've eaten sardines with some fair frequency, I still ask myself "Do I even like this?" and make a face for the first couple bites or so.
Soon enough, though, I'm like "yummy!" and then get a little sad that's there's no more when the tin is finished.
I'm the same way with smoked oysters, where there's always that initial doubt over whether I even like it. But I soon get over it.
And there may be something to the idea that it being gross just adds to the fun. Like stinky cheese.

I typically eat my sardines plain with some sriarcha sauce drizzled on top Or....over sardine crackers
Or, make it into a paste-like texture, and spread over bread as a sandwich (as you would a tuna sammich).
lol, I been eating them so long the smell doesn't bother me0 -
I actually adore sardines by themselves!! I eat them out of the can! But other things I do... Pour them over salad greens (packed in olive oil - and it's like a dressing) or I used the oil to sautee scallops and then I mix in the sardines, for saltiness and more omega-3 fatty acids! SO GOOD!!0
-
I bookmarked this earlier thinking it wouldn't get many responses. Just how wrong was I?
I like sardines spicy on crackers, with olive oil on salads, with lemon on some pizza, and well.... I like sardines! It is one of those foods I have to be in the mood for in certain forms, but you can do a lot of things with them.0 -
King Oscar jalapeño is my favorite, but hard to find consistently around me0
-
On toast! Butter the toast, smush the sardines on top, sprinkling of salt and pepper and heat it up again under the grill. I don't have sardine very often though because the cat gets jealous.0

So many good ideas. Thank you!
Plain...oh, I just don't know if I'm that brave. Suppose I could suck it up and try that. Just have to get over this irrational aversion I have to eating a stinky, raw fish out of a can. They make a great sauce for spaghetti. They just "melt" into the olive oil and garlic. I also like them straight out of the can as others have said.
They basically fall apart so you really can't tell what they were.0 -
I have nothing constructive to contribute. I just read your header & visualized immediately 5-6' humanoids with the heads of sardines going about their weight loss business...
Carry on as you were.0 -

eat them on crackers while playing cribbage with husband! we love the hot sauce or the mustard ones0
-
second the sardines on toast with butter and s&p ,
also I mash them up and mix into hot cooked rice with a little bit of oil, lemon peel, thyme , sriracha sauce and scallions , serve on lettuce leaf0 -
For the sardine lovers: The 5 pack of Seasons brand from Costco is pretty tasty (and sustainably harvested).0
-
I loved sardines on crackers with a dash of hot sauce. I haven't had them since I was a kid and the thought of eating them now is making my stomach queasy. Although I really love anchovies on a Caesar salad.0
-
I've only ever had Brunswick and Beach Cliff kipper snacks- WAYYYY too salty for me
Trader Joe's has some pretty nice sardines. If you aren't into spicy foods, avoid sardines in hot sauce. Just the first bite from Beach Cliffs and HEB's can was enough to make me tear up.0 -

I just can't seem to get into canned sardines. Don't like them as much as tuna or anchovies so I just don't bother trying to 'make' them good.
However, I did have fried whole sardines while I was in France last year that were A-MA-ZING. Came with a lemon/caper/mayo dipping sauce and I'm thinking those flavors would probably perk the canned variety right up as well.0 -
I've never did the anchovies so I don't know.
Now the fried sardines sound pretty interesting. Think I'll try some of those.0 -

Yes, agree about the tasty part, these are the ones I have in my pantry right now. And there it is right on the front which I never noticed before: "all natural wild caught sustainably harvested." Costco carries a lot of farmed fish, so interesting that this isn't also in this case.
They are skinless and boneless and in oil though (all of which is fine by me, but may not be fine for others). I've had bumble bee brand in water with skin and bones, and it was fine too, but I personally prefer them in oil (prefer the opposite in the case of canned tuna).

I usually just them straight out the can (sometimes I get the ones canned in mustard, tomato, or hot sauce), maybe with crackers, but this spaghetti topping idea sounds really good. I'm going to have to try it. Sadly, all out of sardines right now. I usually stock up around Jewish holidays, when my grocery store puts them on sale. Hopefully they'll do that for Hanukkah.0 -
I like the King Oscar sardines with peppercorns or jalapenos or just smoked in olive oil. I try to eat a can every day.0
