calorie burn

How do you know what is accurate with what you have burned during a workout? I use a HRM but i am not sure how accurate it actually is, if i enter in my workout via MFP is says i have burned considerably more than my HRM but then i am not sure my hrm is accurate either e.g i did a 1 hour 40 min workout yesterday only 20mins of that was core work with resistance bands where my heart rate was low, the rest was intense my heart rate was up as high as i could get it the whole time and i sweat buckets literally, at the end of it though it only clocked me as burning 680 cals! surely even though i am fairly fit now i would have burned a bit more than that in a 1 hour 40 min workout? mfp would have had me at burning nearly 700 just for an hour so something is clearly way off as i doubt very much i would have burned that much either lol

any ideas of where i could go to track more accurately my calorie burn?

    go with HRM however nothing is 100%, and 680 cals is not a bad burn remember your muscles keep burning cals for up to 72 hrs after exercise especially if you use weights

    the HRM is best especially if it's one where you can put in your aerobic fitness (VO2max etc) otherwise it'll be using "typical" values based on what you put in for height etc etc.

    There is a posting by Heybales on how to manipulate the settings of the simpler ones to get the desired effect.

    As an illustration, my aerobic fitness isn't great at 30 ml/min/kg VO2max so as at 80 kg I can use 80 * 30 = 2400 ml/minute or 2.4 litres/minute. Multiply by 5 gives me a calorie burn of 12 calories a minute or 720 an hour. Subtract the 70 cals/hour I would use sitting around and my exercise potential is 650 cals/hour - but I can't do VO2 max for 6 minutes let alone 60.

    72? The highest I have read in a study is 38 and they noted that it dropped significantly to near normal RMR very quickly before slowly returning to completely normal. I would not include it in calculation (which is an estimate anyway) but just hope I got a little bonus.
