Can't search for foods I haven't eaten before in app

Hi, I'm using the mfp app on my iPhone. I'm trying to figure out how to search a food I haven't had before on mfp. There's a search box and under it a selection: recent, frequent, my foods, meals, recipes. If I, for example, type in "Apple" no matter what selection is highlighted/not highlighted, it comes up with nothing. On the app I'm not able to search & get new foods except possibly using the barcode scanner. Help!

Actually the iPad version lets me search mfp for foods but not the iPhone version. The iPhone version will only allow me to record a food I've eaten in the past. I'll just use the iPad version.0

It should let you. The only time I have trouble and experience the same thing is when the wifi is down?0

I find that on the iPhone swiping up and then turning Wifi off then back on solves a lot of connection issues.0
