Things to watch out for are wheat, barley, rye, spelt, couscous. Oats are often processed in the same facilities, but you can find "Only Oats" which are gluten free. Some common foods that you might not know contain gluten are liquorice sticks, smarties, some soy sauce, Ovaltine, quite a few chocolate bars and Doritos.

The Doritos I've been eating here in Canada are gluten free, they are certified by the Canadian Coeliac Association. The Nacho Cheese flavour is at least.
  • I recommend the cook book "How can it be gluten free". There's a second book too which I haven't bought yet but the recipes are fairly simple and yummy. They have their own flour mix which I recommend making.

I agree! "How Can It Be Gluten Free" is a great cookbook.

I'm a Celiac, have known for 13 years, and my mom is, too, so it's all pretty automatic now.

As some others have mentioned, it's important to know where there is gluten. The best thing you can do is start reading ingredients of everything you buy. It seems time-consuming but will become natural very quickly!

There are lots of great blogs and cookbooks out there now. A brand I recommend getting to know is Bob's Red Mill - they have a lot of awesome gluten free flours. I also would recommend Udi's if you want to buy some pre made bread. My diary is open if you want to look - just know that I'm also vegetarian and try to limit processed foods! Feel free to message or add me if you have any questions :)

Thankfully I don't have celiacs (my sister does) but I know I have a slight wheat/gluten intolerance. Every time I eat breads and pastas that have wheat and gluten I wake up sick to my stomach! When I (try) to avoid it I am loads better.

Use tamari rather than soy sauce as its gluten free.

Omg please say smarties are gluten free! My kids are so many around Halloween!!

Unfortunately, no! They have wheat flour. Unless the ingredients have changed recently...

    M&M's are gluten free, though!

    I just found this: http://www.smarties.com/product/gluten-free/

It seems they are ok? Neither of my boys reacted at all.

Canadian Smarties, which look like M&Ms, have wheat in them.

American Smarties are called Rockets in Canada, and are little "discs" of sugar. They are GF.

Ah ok!!!!! That makes perfect sense. I didn't even question why you gave me m&ms as an alternative to smarties! I had a major moment of panic. Lol

LOL That confused me a few years ago when me and my boys first went GF too. ;)
