Stop Scaring Cats with Cucumbers!

Apparently, there's this new internet craze where people are hiding cucumbers behind cats, the when the cats see it they freak out. It's all over youtube. Anyway, my roommate did this in the kitchen and the cat broke my food scale as it flipped out in panic all over the place.

So now I need to buy a new food scale. Can anyone recommend a good one?

Yeah, my daughter was all over that, so we tried it.

My cat sniffed it and then went back to eating. She's 17 and fat. A cucumber means nothing to her because she wouldn't eat it.

I would recommend a scale under 15 bucks because as long as it weighs food, it's good enough. Walmart shoudl carry them, I would think. I got mine on ebay for $6 with free shipping.

Got to walmart or target or whatever store is similar near you and pick up one. I have a Taylor I bought years ago and it still works just fine. As long as it has a tare function and changes easily between grams and oz it's all you need.

The only types I'd avoid are the ones walmart sells under their mainstays house brand. They default to oz when they turn on and the tiny switch to change between metric and imperial is on the bottom. So every time you turn it on, you have to pick it up and change the units. If it shuts off while you're working, tough luck.

National Geographic warns it's not good for the cats.

@VeronicaG2B warns it's dangerous to scales too. I got an OXO scale with a detachable display when weighing big things. It works great.

I second the vote for the oxo. I've had mine almost 5 years and it's still going strong. It also uses normal batteries which is much easier imo.

Taylor is what I have too and it's totally epic. Seconded.

Why would a cat be scared by a cucumber?

The National Geographic article explains it. We are putting a funny-shaped thing, maybe a tad snake-like, where the cat is not expecting anything to be. It's a startle response.

According to the article I read about it, they've got some genetic hardwiring to view it as a snake, so they panic.

ETA: on the scale thing, I'm now obsessed with a new one I had to buy that has a totally glass top and no buttons or anything, touch-screen style. Soooo easy to clean and it looks fancy on my countertop. It's by Salter and it's awesome.

If a cucumber appeared out of nowhere on the floor behind me I'd be somewhat startled too. That would probably go for any vegetables randomly appearing.
I'm not going to buy a cucumber (ick) to try to scare my cat though. She's old. It either wouldn't phase her or I'd feel bad for doing it.

I have a basic digital scale. It has oz, g, tare feature. I can't remember what brand it is. It was cheap. I'm not sure how it stands up to a scared cat.

Were you unhappy with your food scale before it got broken? What features are you interested in?
