Sleep Apnea Sufferers - Did You Lose Weight Without Trying After Getting a CPAP?

After years of suspected sleep apnea and trouble losing weight, I finally got a diagnosis and a CPAP. I am aware that sleep apnea makes it harder to lose weight, but I have never seen any claims about what results are typical.

I've been using my CPAP for 3.5 weeks. During that time, I went off diet (rather, I stopped tracking and didn't eat perfectly but didn't go crazy either). I just weighed myself and lost 1.5 lbs during that period of not consciously dieting and not tracking, which has never happened before. I am also famous for gaining weight when I go on business trips and I had a weeklong business trip during the 3.5 week off diet period.

So, I wondered...if you have sleep apnea and went on a CPAP, did you see weight loss? What is your story?

    Sleep is an important part of weight loss.

    @manakimkim it was over 11 years ago and I can not remember about the weight. As @successgal1 points out good sleep is key to losing weight so you losing without trying sounds reasonable based on science.

    What I do remember is my mental fog started to clear and I did not sleep at the keyboard at the office any longer. In a few weeks I realized the mess I had made in running the company. I hired a business major and she got things turned around. Had I not decided to get the CPAP I am not sure the company or I would be here today.

    After losing some weight and gaining all around health wise with my new way of eating I have been able to reduce the pressure setting recently.

    Sleep apnea is a real killer. Glad you got your CPAP. Keep us updated how it helps.

    No, started CPAP in 2014. My Doctor did mention weight loss an added positive benefit of improved sleep. Sleep is important for health, but I continued eat more than I burned, until March 2015.

    I LOVE my CPAP, Tough to get used to at first but NOW, Wont sleep with out it!! I do look forward to the day I lose enough weight I wont need it but, when I do get to my goal weight and still need it. I will welcome it. Livf saver for me. I feel so much better now. I did not relize how sleep deprived I was for years.

    Love my C-PAP. I have been losing weight but I have been trying. If ut helps me to lose weight it is an added bonus! :)

    Weight loss is the result of eating less calories than you burn. Sleep is important for replenishment and because you want to have the energy to move through your day and stay conscious of how much food you are eating.

    I'm glad you got your CPAP and things are working out better for you. :)
