Hi All! I am currently in my last year at college, I was wondering if anyone can offer tips of maintaining a healthy balance of food, since it's the time of stress eating due to finals. I'm trying to avoid junk food as much as possible, but wondering if there are healthy alternatives or tips I should try doing when I crave food when I eat. Thanks :)

Find other non food ways of dealing with your stress. I like to walk or listen to music, yoga is good, or a hobby. Also, getting enough sleep helped me a lot, I know that during finals that is tough.

Another vote for walking, yoga, and sufficient sleep.

Upping my protein in relationship to carbs helped with cravings as well.

What worked for me was to fill up FIRST on veggies and protein (and whatever fat it takes to make the meal). This hits the spot for me, then I'm far less likely to stress/binge eat. For example, at breakfast I'll chop up veggies ( a mix of raw veggies) and use them to stuff an omelet, topped with sourcream, avocado, salsa. I also make a protein shake with some veggies and flaxseed in it.

My personal de-stressers that don't involve food:

    A hot bubble bath
Reading a few chapters of a good book
    Coffee!
    Go for a walk/have a work-out

Find other things that chill you out and calm you down :)

I stress eat too--it is so easy to just reach for something chocolate/ice cream and go to town when I am stressed. For me it is being conscious of what I am doing. At times I still look down and go 'Oh God I grabbed Ben & Jerry' but at least I caught it. Now if I am faced with a stressful situation I walk away. My husband loves it. I get stressed, he says my face goes blank, and I just walk away. But hey better to burn calories walking off the stress than eating them :)
