It's there to ensure that on a less active day you aren't overeating. Say your goal MFP gives you to lose a pound a week is 1500 calories. They're calculating that without exercise, you will burn 2000 calories. Each time you sync your Garmin, MFP looks at what you've done and estimates how much you'll burn throughout the day. If you sync and it guess you'll be burning 2200 calories, then it'll add 200 to your exercise. Now, if you're less active on a day and only burn 1850, eating 1500 calories will negate part of your deficit. To keep it the same, MFP has to subtract 150 calories from exercise.
You can uncheck where it says "negative calorie adjustments", but it's still a pretty helpful tool.0
