Pescetarian Help

I have started a pescetarian lifestyle. Something just clicked in me that I could not eat mammals or land animals anymore.

My nutrition is very flawed. Every time I eat I am full and hungry at the same time. I have only eaten shrimp 3 times in the last 2.5 weeks. I have tried to incorporate beans and protein bars into my diet but all my lunch and dinner recipes have meat. I get these crazy cravings for ice cream and will eat a quart a night (the premium high cals stuff only) and still lose weight which is awesome but my husband is worried that I am malnourished. I still have like 60lbs I want to lose but its not going to be good if I get sick. I have also started Enbrel yesterday so its important I take care of myself. Any ideas? Recipes? Experiences?

    Hello!

Currently dating a pescetarian, so that's pretty much how I'm eating as well. I think you need more variety in your life. Start experimenting with different fish. If you want some great recipes, try epicurious.com. Also, try modifying your current lunch and dinner recipes to include fish. Like, if you have a chicken caesar salad, try it with salmon instead. Or in place of a steak, have a big piece of tuna.

As for your cravings and nutrition, try to plan your meals ahead so you know what your macros/micros will be for the day. Then you can have some ice cream if it fits.

It's an adjustment for sure, but it's not so hard once you get used to it.

You don't have to replace all meat with fish -- but you still want to make sure your protein needs are met. Many people use this as an opportunity to try vegetarian sources of protein -- tofu, tempeh, seitan, beans, grains, and vegetables are all great plant sources of protein you can have in addition to fish. These can be used to help fill the "meat spot" in your diet. You don't have to limit yourself to beans and protein bars (although I like both!), begin exploring the wonderful world of vegetarian/vegan cooking!

Try not to "wig out" with your diet change. Just eat what you used to eat - without the meat, of course. Try new things as suggested. Keep your meals simple & delicious. If you loved chicken enchiladas, try enchiladas made with beans. Or crumble some tempeh into a skillet and fry it up with onions & taco seasoning.

There's plenty of time to explore all the veggies and fish... no need to rush.

As far as the ice cream habit, save calories for night eating. I adore ice cream, too, and not a sad little 1/2 cup serving. Try the "slow churned" flavors from Edy's and Turkey Hill - they're delicious and average 140 calories per half cup. I can double (okay triple) the serving and still be under calorie goal, but I do eat a bit lighter the rest of the day.

Its not for everybody, but you could try sushi. The seaweed they wrap it in is good for you too. I've been a pescetarian for a couple of years now. I was just so tired of all the red meat and fried bird I was consuming, so its just gone now. But there's so much glorious fish to enjoy that's still out there for a pescetarian. Salmon! Oh mah gerd. Salmon is glorious! Merinade it in some Bourbon and teriyaki baste and lemon over night, then grill that bad boy up the next day. Mmmmmm..... So freakin good.

As for your cravings. Those suck. I've been feeling full and hungry myself lately. That's when you really gotta let the veggies kick in! Your body feels hungry for a reason, so you could find a veggie/fruit based snack that can quench the hunger. Snacks, depending on what they are, can actually be a great help.
