Do I measure natural waist...

an inch above my belly button or at my belly button?
I've been measuring an inch above my belly button and my natural waist. I have a long torso and want to know what my actual measurements are. There's a two inch difference between the two and i'd like to calc. my waist to hip ratio for health and corsets.

Natural waist because it will always be easy to find.

I was always taught (and when I made clothes too) the "waist" is the smallest point on the mid section.
When I'm measuring for progress, I log my waist and at the navel.

For me the natural waist is between the button of the rib cage and where my hip bones start.. Since I have a smaller waist compared to my hips, then it is easy to find. The area around or just a little below the belly button is for me the abdominal area. Hips go below that. But I am terrible at taking measurements that is why I trust my clothes and the scale better.

For the ratio, I just take the smallest of my waist measurements, which is usually right below my ribs. My navel is almost 2 inches below that, and I take that measurement, too, because my navel doesn't move so it's a good landmark, lol. It's the same size (within a half inch) as the first one when I've been doing well.

Then I take a 'tummy' measurement below my navel, around the largest part of my abdomen, because I keep weight there differently than the more upper body stuff. I've never seen that one used anywhere in sizing, but it's one I always want to know to gauge my progress.
