shouder injury has set me back

Last year I started using fitness pal with success. Lost 20 in 5 months. I have been highly active in the gym. Recently I dislocated my shoulder. Doctor has taken me off work until surgery is done. I stopped going to gym. Fear that shoulder might pop out again. I'm noticing wieght being put back on slow. I need motivation! What can or can not I do at the gym? Help My Fitness Pals!! Cindy

I broke a collarbone a couple of years ago and was in a sling for month. I found I could still go to the walking track and walk (slowly) or ride the stationary bike. Neither are exactly "fun", and I still gained a few pounds, but they helped me stay somewhat active.

adjusting your diet accordingly is going to be the best thing you can do in regards to weight management...dial it down so that it is commensurate with your activity.

a couple of years ago i sprained both of my rotators in a cycling accident while training for a century. i was out of the weight room completely for a few months and just did my PT work at home with resistance bands. i did a lot of walking but was able to get on my bike after about a month to continue to train, albeit not at the level i was and ended up having to do a 1/2 century instead of the full and even then, my shoulders were pretty sore afterwards.

after a few months i got back into the weight room but mainly worked with very light weight and did a lot of mobility and stretching work. it was a good 6 months total before i really started getting in more traditional work and even then, i kept the weights pretty light.

it took me about 9 months (no surgery) to basically get back to "normal"...that said, i still have to do a lot of mobility and stretching work before I do certain movements and i tend to do things like dumbbell bench presses vs barbell bench presses as they are easier on my shoulders.

good luck and get better...healing is the most important thing right now.

Excellent suggestions above. Pick a goal for recovery time. Could be to maintain weight or lose a little slower. Focus on calories for weight management. Add an activity you can do to keep you moving and active. Get well.

Adjust your diet and see an orthopedist to find out what you can do without exacerbating the injury.
