Are non digital scales as accurate?

I just bought a non digital scale because its cheaper today and I'm confused by the measurements im getting. A jar of jelly tells me a 50 calorie serving is a tbsp, which is 20g. I weighed half a tbsp and got 40 g. Weighed a slice of Great Value bread that was supposed to be 70 calories per slice for 26 grams and got 50 grams. I am scared to weigh the rest of the food I've been eating. I feel like ill go hungry at this rate if calories in food are this high. At the same time, I want to lose 8 pounds by January, and keep losing; I've messed stuff up too much and am sick of being behind because of fooling around. Don't want to waste any more time, yet worried I wont be able to eat normally anymore. Is this stuff accurate?

The thing that makes me angriest is the ice cream sandwiches I bought today. They were advertised as low fat and no sugar, added, though my main concern wasn't fat or sugar but calories, which were advertised as 110. This scale says they're 175.

Try weighing a nickel to see if it shows up as 5 grams. Then you'll know that it's accurate. Typically you'll find that the estimations of the volume measurements (tablespoon, cup, etc) are off from the weights.

Just wanted to add that you can get a digital food scale that will last you quite a while for $10-15

Analog scales can be some of the most accurate weighing instruments. But the accurate ones are definitely not cheaper than the digital ones!

Sorry every1, it looks like I didn't calibrate my scale right. I didn't realize it needed to be at zero till I read the box.

I had a spring scale. Digital scales are worth the extra money. I'd return yours and wait until you can afford a digital one. They're what, $5, $10 more? Well worth it.
