How did you get started at the gym? I currently do an elliptical for between 40-60 minutes. I want to start incorporating weights as well but I feel so overwhelmed at the gym.

It is usually good to start with a program that will involve progressively increasing the weights and cover the major parts of the body. Something like StrongLifts 5x5 is a simple program and you can download an app to keep track and plan workouts. Starting Strength is a good program and also a good way to learn more about the major lifts if that is of interest. The website is http://startingstrength.com/, but there's a good book (a few, but one called Starting Strength) by Rippetoe which is a good resource. There are many other good programs -- the New Rules for Lifting books are good, but can be complicated if you have no background -- and Tom Venuto has some simple ones. There are various other ones recommended here, and hopefully one of the more expert people will weigh in.

From personal experience, I'd say you make it easier on yourself if you plan out what you will do before going to do it, learn the form in advance (youtube and other video sources on the internet can help, although it doesn't hurt to use a training session or a friend for this, if it's an option), and then realize it's okay to be a beginner. Scope out where everything is in advance if that will make you feel more comfortable. Also, pick a program and stick to it for a while -- I made the mistake of constantly changing because I thought something new might be even better, and sabotaged my own progress for some time as a result.

I felt the same way when I first walked into the gym. I felt like I didn't belong. Walk into the weight room and make it your b****.
I remember telling myself I didn't belong there. I remember walking on the treadmill because my ankle would hurt but slowly and surely I've improved. Now I'm running a mile at 7:40.
Look up different exercises you can do with dumbbells or read the little picture that tells you how to use the machine. Very important to pay attention to technique.
Dont worry about how much weight the guy next to is pushing. Everyone is on a different level. I remember I use to bench the 45lb dumbbells. Now I'm pushing the 90s.
Throw on some headphones with good music and do YOU.
