Hey everyone,

Yesterday my husband made Chili con carne without beans for dinner. Since I wanted to have some for breakfast since I had something else for dinner. He made a huge pot including these ingredients:

pork: 220 cal per 100 grams
string beans: 18 cal per 100 gram
White Rice: 350 cal per 100 gram
sauce: ?

I do know roughly how many grams of everything he used, but I don't think its very helpful since I don't know how many servings there are/were in the pot. To get the best estimate, would the smartest thing be to take the highest calorie ingredient (rice 350 cal per 100 gram) and use that for my estimated calorie guess? So say if I have 250 grams of Chili con carne, then 250 grams of boiled rice is 300-323 calories. So would it be best to assume the meal would be 300 calories? That way is I use the highest ingredient, the only harm would be over estimating my cal but that is much better than underestimating. Especially since I can't estimate how much beans/meat is on my meat since everything is mixed together. I assembled the plate using my food scale and it looks like a pretty big portion, especially on such a big plate, so that would be awesome if it's only around 300 cal! By the way, I don't know how me or anyone could live without a food scale in their life! It's impossible to estimate or eyeball how many grams are in something.

As you say, overestimating is probably the way to go and using the highest calorie ingredient will be safe, but remember to multiply by the weights you are using. If I am reading the above correctly, you are planning on having 250 g of rice (so 2.5 X 350 calories; 875 calories total) and 250 g of the chilli (so 2.5 X 220 calories; 550 calories total). Your meal is therefore 1,425 calories.

Thank u for your help, but I'm not sure that's correct. I think you misunderstood me. The food is already made and I only took 250 grams of it total. The meat, rice, and veggies are all mixed together and cooked. I checked mfp and it says white cooked rice is between 300 to 323 cal depending on the one u pick. So that's why I just estimated the meal to be 300 cal. Also the chili flavor is just sauce powder mixed with water. So I thought it's fine since it's not to many calories and would be extra weight to the meal. Since rice is the highest cal item, I think it's ok to assume the meal was 300 cal esp since it's not just rice only, also string beans, pork, and sauce mixed in the rice.
