A benefit of cardio I was not aware of

At some point in late spring / early summer, I had blood tests, and my good cholesterol was shockingly low. Bad cholesterol was normal and I thought my lifestyle was "perfect" from the dr's point of view - high fiber diet, "good" fats, physically active, non-smoker, normal weight.
The dr recommended more exercise and specifically cardio. Because of an injury, I have spent last winter doing almost exclusively strength training, which was a big change for me as I have been running for years. Around this time I had already joined a pool, so the dr was fine with this. She insisted that cardio is the main factor that will help with HDL and that even walking as exercise would be ok. So, without other changes, I focused on swimming at least twice per week (during the summer more like 5-6 times per week) and going for at least a short walk when swimming was not an option.
Today I got my new cholesterol results. HDL is up by 18 points! With no other lifestyle changes. I am impressed!

If I remember rightly it is to do with it being aerobic.

Great result in such a short space of time, impressive! :)
