Logging bacon...

I love bacon, I just don't buy it because it's impossible to log. How in the world do you log it? All the packages I've seen give you the calories for 'pan fried'. Is there a specific brand that gives you nutrition for uncooked?

Mostly no, I usually see it listed as grilled, which assumes a certain amount of fat lost through the grill slots. There are entries for raw bacon in the food database though, and you could then add a serving of -X grams of fat to account for what you lose while cooking it (if you're able to measure the fat that is).0

I mostly have turkey bacon at home and its on the package but if I am traveling I just use dennys or ihops - 2 slices, 70 calories0

Yeah but I want to use the fat from cooking to cook my eggs in, that's the issue, lol. I'll look for a raw generic entry then I guess. Thanks.

I use the generic entries from here http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods
it even has one for bacon grease.0 -

Well I had two slices of bacon then two fried eggs in the grease (I did pour most of it in the sink first though). Just used the USDA entry for raw bacon. I guess I probably threw away 40 calories of fat, but whatever at this point. Then used some homemade bread to wipe off the leftover yolk.

Bacon is one of the few things I don't weigh. I just use the nutritional info per slice on whatever package I'm using. If you're eating bacon daily, it might be worth weighing it out, but otherwise I don't think it matters. I prefer using the Hormel microwave bacon for convenience. They come in packs of 4 and all the slices seem to be pretty much the same size.0

Yes, I use the "Animal fat - bacon grease" for when I cook with the leftover bacon fat. I like to toss my veggies in a tsp of it and it is amazing.0 -

I wouldn't bother either because 'one slice, pan fried' isn't quite accurate anyway whether you weigh it or not (and it's what the package says), but I want to use some of the fat to cook my eggs so that's why it gets complicated, lol. I probably overestimated as I didn't use all the fat, but heck. Even if I only logged the cooked bacon and the fat separately, I have absolutely no idea how much grease was left in the pan when I fried my eggs (and I didn't use all of that either, just what was in the center of the pan).
Sometimes logging accurately is just impossible.

Google raw bacon calories. I did this yesterday for another bacon thread. Raw bacon is something like 1oz/28g =128 calories I just assume I'm eating all of the calories.
As a side note my mom bought me a bacon cook book that has several recipes that use the left over bacon grease. I often brown chicken in it instead of oil, and it's amazing.0
