Missing due to bad cold...

I normally work out 6x weekly; several step &/or Kettlebell classes, & 3x bootcamp per week. Bootcamp is closed for holidays & I took a few days break while I was on holiday in Lanzarote. My knees definitely needed the break, but I did watch & log my food. Unfortunately, I caught a bad cold (I think on flight there, lots of people coughing & sneezing) & I'm still not 100%, still coughing with the horrible sinus drainage in back of throat. I am really missing fitness classes, thinking about trying a Kettlebell workout @ home this afternoon. Any suggestions on working out with chesty cough/cold? (No fever, no headaches definitely cold not flu). Thanks in advance!

If you feel up to it and don’t have a fever, it should be okay to get in a workout (and might even help a little). Just make sure you’re getting plenty of water and stop if you start feeling weak or dizzy (the congestion might keep you from getting in as much oxygen as you’re used to). Thank you for doing this at home and not taking it to the gym (infecting others). Hope you’re back to 100% soon.

Thanks, AllanMisner, too afraid I'll start coughing @ the gym, don't want to "spread the wealth", so to speak!

OP, I just recovered from an awful cold, very similar to yours. I was able to maintain my walking program because the weather has been mild here and when I wasn't coughing constantly, could go to a yoga class (since I bring my own mat and have my own space as opposed to sweating all over everything). Yoga actually helped with some of the sinus congestion. However, I've only just gone back "full throttle" so to speak to my workout program, and frankly am still not up to par. The heavy cardio stuff is wiping me out and driving my heart rate way beyond 80% of maximum. So my advice, resume gradually. When I was sick, I didn't gain any weight, despite going over a few days because I was craving juice.

Start back slowly. I went to the gym too early after a cold once and it was a disaster, almost passed out in my class and they had to call the emergency crew and everything... don't recommend it, lol!!! Start by walking or something instead...

    Hi, thanks for posting!

I started my kettlebells DVD but ended up coughing too much, so switched over to a toning DVD & did about 30 mins. Did manage to get a sweat on, & felt good to do something! Think maybe tomorrow morning I'll do a walk through the park, its about 3 miles, may be able to handle that if weather isn't too bad.

I'm frustrated as I actually feel fine but this stupid mucus running down my throat & coughing is making me crazy. Sorry if TMI! Just drank a hot mixture of Apple cider vinegar/cayenne/honey/lemon to try & sort it. Yuk!!

I do my best to avoid group activities when I have an active cold. I try to do my fellow humans a favor by not passing along viruses.

Yep, me too. I don't appreciate getting it, so don't want to give it.

I recently had a bad cold and just followed what my body was up to. If you feel up to working out, you're probably ready for it. I know that on the days I wasn't ready for it, I didn't even feel like doing anything.

I'm not a group activities person, but I think SherryTeach's advice is good, considerate advice.

Careful with the extra sinus stuff! My cold morphed into a sinus infection. If the congestion seems to linger, get that checked out.

I'm trying to take it easy on the meds, & keep hydrated. A bit better each day. Fingers crossed!
