Is counting calories a good way to lose weight? Do you have to do low carb to lose? Can you still eat bread and lose weight?

Obviously counting calories works otherwise how are you going to know if you are below maintenance to be able to lose weight. In my personal experience I've gone from 148lbs to 190lbs putting on muscle and I am currently cutting and have lost 20lbs so far and I am by no means eating super clean.0
