5th week of Crossfit - Any other newbies?

Hey everyone! I have been a member here for quite awhile. I ended up straying, but not gaining, as I was at the weight my body generally stayed at, but recently I've taken up Crossfit. I have a couple friends who live by it, and that was a big motivator for me. Having them be in classes with me is great. Also, the people at my "box" are all willing to help instruct you as it's impossible to remember all the different lifting techniques, etc when you are first learning. When I started, I could barely do a squat. It was pretty embarrassing. You really find out how out of shape you are. At our box, we have an on ramp program that really helped. It was two weeks (3 days a week) and basically taught me all of the motions. Of course there was no way to remember everything as every session was different moves. I was nervous to dive into regular classes after that, but I showed up and did it. Of course the trainers scale everything down to my level. But I am already noticing big changes. I can almost do push ups now (which is big for me, I had NO upper body strength) and I was able to actually get up into a handstand (against a wall) pretty easily. It shocked me. I even did a few more when I got home because I was happy that I was able to do it. But it's showing me that the more I go, the stronger I'm getting. Having a boyfriend who is military and very fit is a slight motivator also. I want to be able to have the stamina he has as he likes running and such also. I'm eventually going to get him in classes with me, too! I still don't have all the techniques down, but everyone there helps to motivate you and shows you what to do, so I just take my time with it for now. I'll eventually get them down and try for the quickness of it. But for now, I'm still working on learning the correct movements and form, and just the 3 days a week for these 5 weeks, I've lost 5 lbs. :) Any other newbies out there that want to share stories?!

Hello! I'm starting the on-ramp program at my local box on Monday! So, no success story (yet!), buy definitely a newbie. :) There's a CF group here if you're interested, it's called Crossfit Love.

Good for you! I'm very likely joining crossfit when my other gym membership expires in August. But, it is so intimidating. I'm actually training really hard so I will be in better shape before I join! lol!

Happy, don't worry about training really hard to prepare. They will scale things for you. You'll get better as you're there! :) And grl, good luck! It's tough, but worth it! I love seeing results. :)

Hi there - this week I completed my on-ramp sessions and attended my first "real" class. Of course I had to scale everything - the lightest KB, knee push-ups. I also have *no* upper body strength -never have but I'm hoping that will change very, very soon!

I am also doing CrossFit and consider myself a newbie still  I have been going for 7wks since completing OnRamp. I love it!! I am MUCH stronger!! Could not go past parallel for squats and two wks ago the WOD was to do as many Thrusters as possible in 2 minutes. I did 20 with 35# and was proud of myself
That said, HOW are you all putting in your exercises?? I seem to be having a hard time with finding/determining calories burnt for box jumps, burpees, etc. Thank you

I agree about logging the exercise. I've ended up doing something called calesthetics in MFP but that doesn't even scratch the surface of the hard work, variety of moves, and calorie count. I've been thinking about getting a FitBit in the hopes that it will capture the calories accurately.

I am in month two of my workout and 100% Paleo since July 1st. It has been going great. Adjusting to Paleo hasn't been bad, as I emptied all the junk from my house, so no choice but to eat healthy.

I graduated to regular classes since last week Wednesday, so that has been great, because it helps to push me more. It has been great. I love it.

Started out using 10 pund bar, now I am up to 42 lbs. In all honesty I am a P90X grad, so it helped a bit in starting crossfit, but crossfit pushes you way harder

I use a HRM to get the calories I burn. IF it is in your budget to get one, that will be the most accurate you can get to know how much you burn.

Every class is a different routine, sometimes easier that the last, and the HRM will let you know the most accurate reading for each routine

However if not, then you can probably use the Circuit training under Cardiovascular in MFP to log and get an idea of where you are

Get a Polar. A lot more accurate than fitbit.
