I was diagnosed borderline diabetic 27 yrs. ago. In April 2008, my hemoglobin A1C went up to 13.5 and my doctor advised me at that time to start taking insulin. At one point I was taking 60 units Lantus at bedtime and 12 units Apidra before meals ( 4x per day) in addition to my 50/1000 mg Janumet, Cholesterol and High Blood pressure pills.
I started this program in February 2015, and my weight was 270 Lbs. My weekly goal at time was 2 Lbs. a week. By October, I lost about 90 Lbs. my weight was down to 180 Lbs., I stop taking insulin and all my other pills. And my Hemoglobin A1C went down to 6.5.
If you have diabetes, this is the way to reverse it. If you want more info. on reversing your diabetes, there are some other books I can recommend you read.

Also diabetic. Type I here. I agree working out and taking a low carb (and low glycemic index carbs when you do take carbs) is a good way to attack it.

It sounds like you and monettaboy are both type II so we may have some different experiences. Before cutting back on carbs (and calories) I was 45 units of Lantus in the morning and between 8-20 units of Humalog at meals. I am currently on 40 units of Lantus and 0-3 units of Humalog for meals. My morning sugars are normally pretty low though so I may cut the Lantus back further and up the humalog a bit in it's place. If I go low at night I wake up with a rager of a headache that can sideline me for the day.

Monettaboy, congratulations on the A1C of 6.5. That is the magic number where there is no increased risk compared to the normal match population. I am sitting at 7.0 at the moment but 6.5 is my goal too.

Either of you using a pump by chance? I am waiting for the new Tandem Slim G4 to become available here in Canada but am thinking of switching over when it does. CGM would be awesome and if it's tied to the pump its covered by my insurance
