I'm sick.

Since I can't eat much, looks like it's time to get my diet back on track. I put on a few pounds over the holidays! Anyway, I'm trying to get rid of a sinus infection or cold by New Years Eve which is in just a couple of days. I say sinus infection or cold because my mucus is not white and I'm prone to sinusitis, so I'm about 90% sure that's what it is. Is what I'm doing going to kill it?

Log of my stuffs. It came on yesterday. So I just started trying to cure it as soon as I got off work:

after work- went to Kroger and bought a bunch of soup and stuff.

went home- Took a non- drowsey sudafedrine, drank apple cider vinegar tincture (1 cup hot water, 2 tsp apple cider vinegar, 1.5 tsp lemon juice, 1.5 tsp honey) while in a hot shower with slightly warmed grapeseed oil in my ears. Then I ate a left over calzone which I know is terrible for mucus, but I didn't want to waste my money from the night before when I bought it. Those things aren't cheap! Before bed, drank hot apple cider with 2 tsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp. honey, 1tsp lemon juice, and a shot of spiced rum. Then ate a brownie. Not sure if that hurts or helps a sinus infection but...definitely need to ween myself of the holiday diet anyway. As in the see food diet.

This morning- drank another hot apple cider vinegar tincture. Went into work. Now drinking coffee with a green tea ginger tea bag added. And took another non-drowsey sudafedrine.

For lunch- going to eat a spicey soup- maybe a red pepper gouda or a southwest veggie soup and take another non- drowsey sudafedrine. (I boutght alka seltzer which I could take instead but don't know if I would over do it or if that would be good). Also going to drink yet another apple cider vinegar tincture.

For dinner- Doing the same.

Am I over doing it with this get well diet or is this going to boost my immune system and kill it quickly? I know all of these remedies are full of vitamins, anti oxidents, astringents, pro biotics, and water which are great for the immune system and bacteria fighting. But I don't know how much is too much. Like I say, I'm on a time crunch. No not so much because I want to party. But because I have already spent non refundable money on hotel rooms at the venue and I have obligations that day. Anyway, Any suggestions would be helpful. I have today and tomorrow to get over it.

Where's my health nuts at?!

    Seriously?

I'd take a bunch of NyQuil and eat anything that sounded good. That's way too much thought and work, especially if I were sick.

My doctor told me that the mucus color thing was bunk, and you can't tell anything off of the color of your mucus.

I wish it were that easy for me. But I have an allergy to Dextromethorphane and I also have gastritis which is kindof embarrassing to say, but true. Which means I have serious issues digesting and handling the effects of cold meds. I can take 1/3 of the recommended dose and it doesn't work because I don't take enough and when the effects should wear off by the end of day, they take days. So I really would rather not. Never heard that about the mucas though. I still feel like it's sinusitis though. But I could be wrong.

See a doctor. Self diagnosis and asking the internet for help with non standard treatments to a virus is not a sensible idea.

Been to the doctor for this many times. Never helps. They put me on antibiotics which weaken my immune system and keep me on steroids which don't help. Thanks though. For most I guess maybe that works. But they only give you meds to mask the problem never heals it. This is a recurring issue, thus it's not a self diagnosis. No need to go to the doctor for every little thing. Especially with as much virus is in the air there. No thank you!

If it's a cold, it's just going to have to run its course. Cold remedies are largely about decreasing your discomfort.

You could get similar relief with antihistamines like Benadryl at night and/or nasal spray decongestants like Afrin during the day, if typical cough and cold formulas are bothersome for you. I'm getting over a cold now, it's going around. You can check health maps to see what's going around wherever you are.

"Boosting your immune system" is mostly a nonsense phrase in the colloquial sense. What boosts the immune system is disease. But plenty of liquids are good for hydration and comfort.

If you have a sinus infection you may need antibiotics and Afrin may not be a good idea if this is the case. Go to a doctor if you really believe what you have is more serious than the common cold.

There is no food that is going to clear up an actual infection, at least nothing proven. That requires some combination of antibiotics and time.

A sustained nutrient-rich diet and adequate sleep can boost your immune system over the long term, but you can't just eat a lot of vitamins this morning and have a stronger immune system this afternoon. That's not how it works.

In general hot liquids can help clear up congestion and soothe your throat and sinuses, so drinking tea and eating chicken soup, then sleeping the rest of the day will probably do the most good. I find Menthol cough drops help to keep my head clear when I have allergies.

Please be careful with chronic sinus infections, they can become rather serious. If you are constantly getting sick, focusing on getting more nutrients in your every-day diet and getting more (or better quality) sleep can improve your immune system over the long term. If you believe you are getting recurring sinus infections, you should see an ENT specialist if you haven't already.

I have not. But plan to do so soon. Thanks everybody!

Have you done the netti pot thing to flush out your sinuses a couple times per day with saline? I have battled chronic sinusitis for years having been through a battery of antibiotic and steroid treatments, nasal sprays, allergy tests, and even surgery. I tried the holistic thing, and was tested for all sorts of things they thought might have been underlying issues such as mono. The netti pot thing actually does help give me some relief, though the traditional netti pot doesn't work for me...I need to use the squeeze bottle kind.

I've never seen the squeeze bottle kind. I've used just the plastic kind on occasion. Even ear candles. Honestly though. I think I need my head vacuumed and squeegeed. lol Perhaps a shamwow.

hahaha I certainly know the feeling! I am battling a sinus infection myself, right now. It's not bad enough where I feel like I want to crawl into a hole and die, but it's bad enough to be incredibly annoying and a bit uncomfortable. I'm trying to ride it out without antibiotics, but that usually just ends with an ear/throat/eye/whatever infection on top of my sinusitis. We'll see, I guess. Good luck!

Mucous not being clear is just due to your white blood cells, it is not a sign of infection.

I hope you feel better soon,
