My question is how do you cope with over indulgent days? Do you eat at a greater calorie deficit the next day "to help reduce the impact" or do you stick with your original amount of calories you have been eating to lose weight? (Sorry only half of my message ever seems to post!)

I don't stress over it, and start fresh the next day.

Just write off the over indulgence and start fresh tomorrow. You may not lose quite what your goal is- maybe .15 of a lb less. But in the whole scheme of things a day of bounty is negligible.

Remember you are building habits for life and it is how you recover from a normal celebratory day that is important; not how much you can beat yourself up about it.

    Cheers, h.

I like to log my "over" days (even if it's an extreme "over"), so I know what I'm dealing with. Often, those times involve at least some food prepared by others (or restaurants), so I estimate, and (if I can't be precise) try to err on the side of over-estimating. That helps me understand what the impact is. With the knowledge (or estimated knowledge ;) ), I can decide what I want to do.

Often, I mentally compare the overage to my daily deficit: How many days delay of weight loss does it imply, or how many extra days of eating at my current deficit? Depending on how I feel about that, I may do nothing special (accept the delay), add some exercise activity over the next few days, or cut a modest amount extra (100-200 calories daily from my current 1600-net daily calorie budget) for a few days. I almost never make a change that extends more than a week, no matter how big the overage. Nor do I cut back so far to compensate that it causes a nutritional problem (such as too little daily protein).

If it's a special occasion I can anticipate, often I'll do something in advance to "bank" extra calories - cutting for a few days in advance, eating lightly earlier in the day if it's just a dinner, getting extra exercise.

That said, I think middlehaitch has good advice: A few days a year that are truly special celebration days are not going to make or break one's goals. They happen, and we go on. It's the routine days that make the difference.

It's going to be okay. New Years is just one day. :)

When I overeat, I log it and move on.

My over indulgent meals generally come at night and I am able to exercise more that day. I also eat lighter beforehand. Making up for it the next day would be a slippery slope for me.
