Lost in all this research...

I've been doing some research, and boy is there a lot of it. Not even sure what the best thing is for me to do...

What are you researching and what type of resources are you using? There's a lot of misinformation out there. It can be difficult to sort through it all to find out what works for you. May I suggests reading the threads that are stickied at the top of the getting started and general diet/weight loss forums entitled Most Helpful Posts. These are fantastic summaries of helpful information.

Is this Google research on nutrition? No wonder. I suggest getting pickier with your sources and it will get a lot less confusing.

    My go-to sources include

    http://www.choosemyplate.gov

    and

    http://www.diabetes.org

(I was type 2 diabetic for many years before going in to remission)

Why do I pick sources like these? They are experts listening to experts and are pulling together conventional, consensus opinion.

    +1

2 days of some kind of strength training, moderate to vigorous cardio most other days of the week would be ideal for fitness for health, according to NASM
    http://blog.nasm.org/fitness/fitness-how-much-activity-is-enough/

But if you haven't exercised in a long time, it's ok to build up to that - or if you can't manage that, do the best you can, something's better than nothing.

I'd start with 2-3 workouts a week, whatever you enjoy. At some point, think about doing resistance training (if that's not what you start out enjoying), because that's what will help you keep your muscle mass as you lose, and protect your bones.

To lose weight, it's more about the diet.

don't get buried in the complicated science schematics of it all. Keep it simple, just eat well and stay moving!

    10 000 steps daily

    3 resistance workouts per week

stay within your calorie range (500 to 1000 deficit, assuming you want to lose weight)

    eat clean

    log daily

Can't really go wrong with the above.

What are your goals? It all starts there and then you can get on with your self-experimentation to find what works for you. There are very few absolute truths in health and fitness.

    ^^This.^^

As the saying goes, don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Too many people get caught up in finding the "best" thing to do or in thinking they have to do that thing exactly the "right" way. And they use those as an excuse to not do anything.

Deficit is dependent on how much you have to lose (a lot of people don't need 1000 cal deficit), and there's no need to 'eat clean' - whatever that means to you- to lose weight.
