How can I weight train at home?

I have a baby and a toddler. My partner works all day and I work from home in the evenings. There is no way I have time for the gym (or the confidence to go!)

I really want to weight train alongside my cardio. Is there anything I can do at home?
If anyone has any tips I would be so grateful.

You need weights to weight train, however purchasing a suspension system can help with doing exercises you can't do with just body weight (rows, flyes).
All gyms usually will have daycare for a toddler and baby. People in gyms DON'T CARE about others in the gym. That's just a insecurity issue that can be overcome with consistency.

  • There isn't a gym in my town with a creche. I don't think it's that common in the UK. I've never seen one at any gym I've been to in the past. I am very much limited to home exercise at present due to agoraphobia. I'm just worried the cardio alone isn't enough.

I bought a used weight set up (bars, plates) for $60, and my dh built me a rack. I work out in the garage or back patio while my toddler plays or naps. I use a free app or video for my routines.

Personally, I'd rather work out at home. If I had to get to the gym to work out, I'd do it MUCH less often.

Just posted this link elsewhere so I will pass it on to you too.
Nerdfitness is a body weight programme that you can do at home. It isn't lifting weights, you are using your own weight instead.

Go to the Success Stories forum and read this mom's thread. She goes in to detail about what she did at home, and what few pieces she purchased.

Look at a suspension system then. Can be used anywhere and you can do just about any type of exercise. You don't have to spend a lot either.

I'm not sure what kind of space you have but I've been lifting at home for 3+ years. I have a barbell, plates, bench and squat rack. A few dumbbells. I do it in the morning before everyone wakes up!

Unfortunately we don't have room for equipment like that. We did have a lot of garage space until my partner decided he wanted a giant pool table.. which he now doesn't use but won't part with! :)

The other option, again taking some space, would be a machine like a Bowflex or similar. Some of those fold up decently when not in use, but you need floor space when you use it. They aren't cheap though, and they are heavy, so you'll probably need some help just getting it in the house if you have it delivered.
