Polar A300 help

Can anyone help me with my new polar watch? I don't understand the calories and what they are supposed to mean. I had it on for a half hr when I got it and it was at 1268.....why? How does it sync to MFP? And if you're a veteran user, why does it only sometimes sync to my phone, but doesn't always?
