Heat Exhaustion?

So, yesterday, I pushed myself a little too hard and got heat exhausation. It's not hard here in south Mississippi, yesterday the heat index was in triple digits all day. I had blurry vision, throwing up, high fever, the whole deal. I felt pretty awful all last night, but today I feel great and ready to go again.
My question is, has anyone else gotten heat exhaustion? And if so, how long did you wait before getting back out in the heat and working again? Did you start off slow and work your way back up to 100%? What's the best way to approach this to make sure it doesn't happen again?

I haven't had heat exhaustion but wanted to tell you to be careful out there! I'm a few hours north of you and we've had the same weather... triple degree heat index from sunup to sunset basically. I've been trying to avoid exercising except for early in the morning or right before sunset (and that is just walking). Personally, if I were you I'd take it easy or at the least try to do something indoors today. And drink plenty of water!0

You are very fortunate that you recovered so well. Many patients end up in the hospital and your symptoms lead me to believe that you should go easy today. Hydrate, cool compresses and try to exercise indoors, if at all. Please, take it from a long time nurse, this is nothing to play around with. Heat exhaustion can kill. I would prefer you rest today as it pertains to exercise. Also, whatever you did yesterday that led to that, try something different. Earlier in the day or later after the heat is less severe....please, your body was put through a lot yesterday.0

Wow! I am not a medical person but have had this happen (much, much less severe) to me in the past. It does get hot and humid up here in Michigan. We've been pushing 90 degrees with 80-90% humidity. It's not so much the heat, but the humidity that really takes its toll on me. But, I must say this, you folks in the South must be really careful! As our nurse friend points out, heat exhaustion/heat stroke can kill! Rest and rehydrate today. Wait until tomorrow to exercise, then just do some light walking -- better yet swim in the early moring or evening when the sun isn't directly overhead. Because I have to get up early for work, I've been known to take my chocolate lab out at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. for a walk around the neighborhood. It's early, but not so hot. I still sweat but I never feel like I'm going to be sick. Take care of yourself! This is all about being HEALTHY, not pushing yourself to heat exhaustion.0

North Carolina here....and I can definitely relate. I tend to exercise early or late in the day, drink LOTS of water before, during, and after exercise, and I also don't strain myself too much. Try to spread out exercising as not to push yourself too hard.0

Water before, water during, cover up, water after....protein, and more water.0

remember also if you are sweating excessively you are losing solutes as well as water, and if you lose too many solutes your body will not hold on to the water as well. Try Smart water which is zero calories and has electrolytes to help your body maintain fluid volume.0
