Hi Jennifer. I am in Tennessee as well. I am 5' 1.5" tall and 10 years ago I weighed 307 pounds. For me, it took gastric bypass surgery. BUT, losing it without that is the best way to go. It needs to be a last resort. That being said, the gastric bypass CAN help with your diabetes. The other types, not so much, I don't think.

You CAN do this but if you just look at the larger number, you will get discouraged. The best thing I can suggest, to begin with is to break your goals down. 1. Look at the weight loss goal in 5 pound increments (that is reasonable and achievable), 2. clean your kitchen from top to bottom of all the stuff that is bad for you, 3. cook things in larger batches and freeze so that you have good meals readily available, and 4. avoid eating out as much as possible.

When I eat out, I pack it on quickly. I went through too much to lose the weight (I am around 142 now and am working to get back to 133) to allow stress, foolish choices, and life to control me. That is what I was doing. Yes, you WILL have bad days--but when you do, the NEXT DAY, tell yourself "this is a brand new day" and pick up the gauntlet and get right back on track. YOU CAN DO THIS! I have faith in you!

One thing I do is what I call "mindful cheating". The name is blatantly stolen by me from the "mindful eating" style of dieting. For me, I plan when I am going to cheat and when I do, I have control over the level of cheating that occurs. Now, when I go out to eat with friends, I am very cognizant of what I choose to eat. If I know there is a birthday party coming up, I plan to have a small slice of cake...and then stop. MyFitnessPal is great at help you be VERY aware of what you are putting in your mouth. I find that most of the time, mindless snacking and boredom eating (and stress eating) are what get me off track. By keeping track of what I eat, I don't do that so much.

About the only place I eat that is fast food is Wendy's because I LOVE their Apple Pecan Chicken salad (half size) and their small chili (with onions and cheese) and usually wash it down with a large unsweetened iced tea (which I sweeten with stevia.)

Jennifer, you really can do this. The hardest parts are starting it...and not giving up in times when you have bad eating days. Stick with MyFitnessPal because it really will help you...and it definitely helps having the support. Hang in there, Kiddo! ;)
