Pedometer

Any recommendations or things to avoid in a pedometer? Do I just pick one up at the grocery?

I'm not going the fitbit route for a few reasons. Just looking for something simple that shows steps and hopefully calories on the actual device, without connecting it to my phone.

I got the Omron HJ-321 Tri-Axis Alvita Pedometer from my doctor. It will meet all the requirements you mentioned and is only $17.49.

I got a FitBit One for Christmas but still take the Omron on my walks too so I can see how long the walk was without needing to subtract starting steps. I also like its Aerobic Steps feature - when you have been walking continuously for 10 minutes it gives you Aerobic Steps.

However, the Omron is not great at tracking steps around the house as it will not start counting until you have taken at least 10 steps. Since I'm in a small apartment, it undercounted my steps around the house. But if you are primarily wanting it for actual walks and don't need it to sync to anything, I recommend it highly.

The Omron does include calories but I never looked at them so don't know how accurate that is.

FYI with a fitbit one you can track an individual event from start to finish and you will see it logged so you won't have to subtract anything yourself. Its the same process as tracking sleep where you hold down the "button" until the count starts and then you hold it down again when you complete. All steps taken during that period will display in your activity log.

I used to think the fitbit was lame, I bought the surge and am constantly checking it, we have done studies on accuracy and it is pretty amazing for step count.

I think the Omron is a good fit for me. I put it on my birthday list!
