Coffee and hunger

I thought caffeine suppresses appetite but today I drank more coffee than usual (black) and ended up ravenous. I normally have 1-2 cups after lunch. Today I had a rather large cup out this morning and then my normal cup after lunch. Holy jitters!! I was jittery at 2:30 and had a protein bar. After my well balanced dinner I was still starving and ate over my budget. It wasn't just a craving. It was I. Need. To. Eat. I will not be drinking that much coffee again. Not going to test this again.

Is it possible that you are close to your period? I find that coffee reduces my appetite, except close to my period. If you've made other changes to your eating within the last week or so it's most likely that your body is catching up to those changes and it's not related to the coffee.

No, not close to my period and no changes. I thought the hunger was related to that jittery feeling. Not sure.

Coffee can cause the jitters. Also anxiety in some people.

I wouldn't extrapolate anything from a one time experience. IMO that's where a LOT of bad advice comes from. There are many things that affect appetite. Not the least of which are how much or little you've consumed in the past few days, how much exercise you've gotten, etc.

I find coffee to be a filling and satisfying "snack."

I find there's a delicate balance between not enough and too much coffee. Not enough and I get headaches and feel like i'm starving. Too much and I get jittery and feel like I could eat a whale. Just enough and I feel great, and no hunger at all.

Coffee used to supress my appetite really well. But I can't drink more than one cup anymore (I like dark roast 100% filter coffee, black and bitter), because since two weeks ago I get these weird stomach pains if I do.

Don't miss the appetite suppressant though. I've gotten used to less food. :)

A cup of coffee has always acted as a small appetite suppressant for me as well, but I've never tested drinking a lot of coffee or had this experience. But I do know that there are some days that I am just HUNGRY. Other days, not so much.

    Agreed.

    +2
And as someone else mentioned, the line between just enough, and too much coffee is a very fine one. The effects of too much coffee are very unpleasant for some.

I wouldn't think it would make you more hungry. Maybe something else was going on. More workout, less water, etc. But feeling jittery from a caffeine crash is definitely possible. I love coffee but have to be careful not to drink too much.

I understand but certainly it won't harm me to not drink an enormous coffee in the morning (which I don't normally do any way).
