Really how important is eating completely clean to get defined abs?

I know having defined abs is all about having a low enough BF percentage so that your abs are able to show. You really just need to get that extra fat off your stomach so that you can see your abs, and no matter how many ab workouts you do they won't become any more defined if you still have some extra fat hiding them. So now the question is, how important is eating completely clean in achieving this goal? Why can't you just eat at a calorie deficit, meet your macros and watch your processed foods and sugar intake to lose some fat and therefore see more ab definition? I read an article that stated that your diet needs to be completely clean -- no processed foods, little to no refined carbs, no sugars, etc. I just don't know how much I buy this... Anyone else have some insight?

Often times limiting processed foods makes it easier to create the required deficit without a person feeling like they've starved themselves. Everyone is different. Also, the high sodium in processed foods can play with water retention levels making abs less visibly noticeable. Is eating clean mandatory, no of course not, but it doesn't hurt, and for some it is the best way.0

I got mine eating full on rolo ice cream 3 days a week, and some other "dirty food" the other 4. I fit in a treat every day0

Perfect! I often add stuff like that to my ice cream but rolos are a great idea. They are not bad on the calorie count actually.0 -
I used to be married to a competition body builder- Believe me, it's not important in the slightest. It's your total cals in compared to what you expend that will burn off that fat.0

I wonder if the author of that article is one who suffers bloat from refined carbs and sodium (typical in processed foods)? I tend to get puffy around the middle from gluten-heavy meals. I imagine if I had visible abs they'd be obscured if I had an inflammatory response to some foods. I do hear of people eating low sodium diets to keep their cut look.
But if you don't react to those foods, it doesn't matter.0 -

I like adding lollies (gummy/jelly ones)... They go hard and take forever to chew. Also PB chips, m&m's and chocolate cereal...0 -

But if you don't react to those foods, it doesn't matter.
This happens to me when eat high sodium or certain foods. At my leanest I had some definition, but it could go away after a sodium rich/high carb meal.0
