Too hungry after a workout

Suggestions on what to eat right before a workout so I don't feel like shoveling carbs in my face afterwards? I stop on my way home and do about an hour or a bit more depending, and I usually am home by 5:00-5:30 afterwards because I'm off work by 3:00-4:00 usually. I have tried eating a banana and/or some air-popped popcorn. I've also tried eating some nuts, but I have to be careful not to eat too many because they are really high calorie, but I thought protein may be better (and it really didn't help). But some days I come home and I'm like where's the food? I need to eat! And I don't want to blow the budget and ruin my calories for the day. Also, I am NOT a morning person (although I now wake up earlier due to my aging body) so I am not one to go in before work. Plus I am not really motivated to come home, make dinner, eat and then go back out- just not going to happen if I come home first because like I said I get off at 3:30-4:00 most days so that's too early to eat dinner (plus it's winter and once I'm home I want to stay home). I know it sounds like I am making excuses (which I am I guess) but just looking for FOOD ideas to eat before going to work out so I don't eat everything in sight when I come home, especially sugar/carbs because that's what I crave after working out, which makes sense as exercise causes your blood sugar to drop.

An hour before you leave work try some pistachios, beff jerky, and a cheese stick. Post workout have a smoothie. Fruit, yogurt, and whey powder, maybe honey or a sweetener. Eat a regular meal later at night. OR, flip them around. Is this meal timing? Probably. Is your body/brain wired for cold/dark/comfort...maybe. Try a combo of fat and protein pre or post workout and see what works. Things I store at work and I can combine pre workout seem to be fine. Good luck.

I'm not a big beef jerky person, but I will try it. Thanks for the suggestions!
