Hello Stephanie, I wish you luck in your "battle of the bulge" as I like to call it. The things that I found that worked for me is; weigh, measure, and log everything that you consume. Find activities that you enjoy and incorporate them into you exercise routine, it's not as much a chore when you are doing something that you enjoy. Set easily obtainable goals, if they become too easy then set them a little higher. Nothing can be as deflating as missing a goal, which is where lots of people fail, they just simply had unrealistic goals. Remember what is realistic for me may not be realistic for you.
This can be as hard to do as you want or you can make it fun and somewhat easy if you so choose to do so.
Instead of saying I'm going to lose 2 pounds a week start with one, if that becomes to easy go to 1.5, if that is not doable back it down to 1.25.
Set a goal for 12k steps a day, to easy? Set it to 15K. Best is to average that over several weeks and then target the average or slightly increase it.
Also insure that all your data is accurate, if you are using a HRM your data has to be accurate, ie, weight, activity level, height, and so on.
As for activities, anything that gets you moving is good and if it gets your heart rate up than its even better! I personally loved running on the beach and doing HIIT routines (Yes loved it!) However, injuries and father time have taken there toll on me so I have had to find other activities or other exercise to include in my HIIT. Maybe you like dancing, go out dancing with friends or find a place that offers dance lessons. Just think of ways to keep yourself moving.
You can do it, good luck (not that you'll need it!)
    V/r,
    DW!
