Dizzy

I was trying to cut out bread and sugar and get my carbs from fruit and vegetables but for about 4 days I was feeling dizzy and had brain fog. Then last night I had an emotional eating moment and ate poor arts and a bowl of cereal and noticed the dizziness going away. Woke up , had my cottage cheese and strawberries and felt dizzy again. Worked out and had another bowl of cereal afterwards and then soup and half a sandwich later for lunch and again the dizziness subsided. I've lost a lot in a short amount of time , 13 lbs in 10 days. Could the dizziness be from lack of carbs?

13 pounds in 10 DAYS??? Safe weight loss is 2 lbs in 7 days. You're starving your body- No wonder you're having dizziness!
What's your baseline calories? Eat all of your baseline calories, and eat a complete balance of carbs, fats, sugars, proteins. Make sure you're getting enough protein, too. You don't say what kind of workout your doing, but if you're building muscle, you need more protein in the mix. :)
  • No weights, just elliptical and treadmill. Base calories as set by a registered dietician 1570. Protein around 30%, fat goes over all the time to about 40ish % and carbs about 30%. And I only started 10 days ago, so much of that is water weight loss. I just was wondering if it was calories or carbs making me not feel good

^^This. It's far more likely that your dizziness is from too few calories overall than from low carbs (and cottage cheese and strawberries both have carbs, anyway). But dizziness could also be from all kinds of things unrelated to what and how much you're eating, so if raising your calories doesn't eliminate it consistently, you should go see your doctor.

You could be experiencing low blood sugar from the lack of complex carbs - check with your doctor
  • Ok thanks, I do have other medical issues so if it continues I will definitely go to the dr. When I'm dizzy my heart is racing but when I'm exercising it doesn't feel like that and my hr is about 160 when I'm working out.

With losing that much water weight you've probably dumped a load of electrolytes. I'd give some electrolytes a try and see if it subsides. Just like when you're out in the heat and sweat a lot you can get dizzy and pass out (lowers your blood pressure). Just an idea.
  • Like pedialyte or Gatorade? Or is there another way to get electrolytes?

mainly sodium (hence why sweat is salty). Try some chicken or beef broth. :)
  • Thank you!

Eating back any of those exercise calories?

reduce your deficit. I know you have been doing great these last few days so I didnt say anything, but if this is what you are experiencing then you are probably not eating enough.

This would be my question too. How much cardio are you doing, and are you eating back some of those calories? Are you actually eating the 1570? Some days you are netting between 600-900, others are better. It is unlikely that you are getting enough nutrition into your body to fuel the workouts you are attempting. I suggest eating more on your heavy workout days.

It also appears that you are not using a scale to weigh your foods, but using measuring cups, those can be inaccurate. And some of your calorie burns are really high, how are you measuring calorie burns? Going to hard from the gate can often lead to crashing.

Have you read the stickied threads at the top of the getting started and general weight loss forums, the ones titled "Most Helpful Posts?" I highly recommend looking at the ones on logging accurately, and on exercise calories. Some great information for when you first start out.

Also, you might want to spread out your eating so you don't have the highs, lows, dizziness. Instead of eating just at meal time, put some snacks in there and make sure you are netting those 1570 calories each day. It will really make a difference.

Ugh bless your heart. I'm on that for my nerve pain and fibromyalgia. It's horrible stuff. I stupidly stopped it abruptly once and felt suicidal for two weeks
I still think it would benefit you to look into how many calories you are having thou. Have you read the guide to sexy pants sticky and the others? I read them every couple of months to refresh my memory. The old posts are very helpful xx

Did your doctor tell you to quit cold turkey? Most of the SSRI's need to be titrated down. (Also, it is not evil, just not for everyone)
  • No I had to wait for payday. I didn't mean it's evil, I'm refilling it today . But the withdrawal symptoms are bad and no one ever warns you about that when you start taking it. Look up cymbalta withdrawal symptoms

Yes, I take it for the same reasons plus anxiety/ depression. I upped my calories the last few days also and honestly will probably go completely off program today and get back at it tomorrow

I have been on several antidepressants and went through what you did (having to stop taking it because I couldn't come up with the money to buy it). I agree that withdrawal is horrible. If you get to that point again, can you contact your doctor and get a few free samples to tide you over until payday? They usually have brand name available, just not the generics. Also, is your income low enough to get on a Patient Assistance Program with the drug manufacturer? Many will provide the meds free of charge if you can't afford them. That is how I got on Viibryd, which turns out to be the best antidepressant I have taken. I could get samples, then free from the Pharma company and now that I have insurance, I still take it and it costs me $8 for a 3 month supply.

One other thing I did when I knew it would only be a week or two before I could buy more was take one every other day instead of every day so I didn't have to deal with the withdrawal as much.
  • Update: I started back on my cymbalta and am already feeling so much better. It was getting really bad. I'm not dizzy today and no brain fogginess. Feel like I need a ton of water. The pharmacist said that when you go off like that, your body is searching for something that is got used to and that's where you get the withdrawal symptoms from, your body searching everywhere for it. Hopefully the racing heart with stop as the anxiety subsides.

Oh gosh withdrawing from meds - esp suddenly is horrible! That def can explain what happened. When I had to get off lamictal (I got the dreaded lamictal rash that's life threatening!) I thought I was dying.

    I'm glad you're feeling better!

Ugh, med withdrawal, I know that feeling! Had to deal with about a month of symptoms when I went from 300mg of Wellbutrin down to 150. Not fun! Glad you figured out what it was!

Also, I wouldn't worry about going low carb unless you have a medical condition that requires it. As long as what you're eating fits into your daily calories, the types of foods you eat don't matter. You might find you feel fuller with less carbs and more protein, or you might find the opposite, but unless you have a medical condition, you don't HAVE to do low carb. Whatever you choose do to, make sure it's something you're comfortable doing for the rest of your life. ^_^
